IT'S AN OSTRICH Part Deux!!!
On the second trip to the sand pit today the trailer driver in front of me slammed on his brakes, which caught me by surprise, I stepped out of my truck to ask him what his problem was. I didn't get the chance as he came running back to my truck yelling about something in the road. We both walked to the front of his Mack and sure enough there was a big ugly bird standing in the road. I said "Oh shit not again!" The other driver was not sure what I had meant till I explained to him about the big ugly bird and the horse in Sanford. He asked me what kind of bird it was, I told him it was an Emu and judging by the hole in the fence that's where it came from! The driver then asked me what do Emu's eat and I told him humans.... Didn't make him any more comfortable. As luck would have it a Johnston County Deputy pulled up and told us that the ugly bird had escaped three times this day. It was funny just watching the deputy herding the bird back into the pasture from which it came.. Meanwhile I explained to the distraught driver that Emu's, Ostriches, and Penguins were left off the evolutionary map and were left to their own devices but only the penguin was smart enough to figure out that wearing "formal dinner wear" would gain them much popularity.. The other two were just flightless, some what useless, occupants amongst the members of the food chain!!! I don't think I made him feel any better!!! This afternoon the foreman asked him about his "mirage"!!!

LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS__________ fill in the blank.......
AH, a fine Thursday morning found a few of the beleaguered dump wagon drivers in New Bern NC to help finish a road project. On the ride to this fine city by the sound there is a sign on US 70 which states "Watch for bears next 20 miles" No it is not a warning to look out for LEOs!!! When the 6 of us arrived at the asphalt plant, the youngest of the drivers came to me asking about the sign and what kind of bears were there. I was going to tell him "polar" but I doubt he would have appreciated the humour. I did tell him there were black bears wandering the woods along 70. His bewilderment was comical in itself, cause he asked where did they come from, I just couldn't resist "Momma Bears!!!" He didn't laugh then asked if they escaped from a circus, all this time I thought this guy was kidding but soon realized he was dead serious... I did try to explain that Eastern NC was a natural habitat for black bears and if he looked real close at some of the city signs in New Bern he would see that the bear is the citys mascot.... I'm not sure if he was satisfied with the answers but I do know that for the rest of the day he could be seen riding along US 17 and NC 43 staring out into the fields and woods looking for bears. Maybe it was a good thing I didn't tell him there were sharks in the sound in Washington(NC) he may have never come out of the truck!!!
