Well, when I was in training I started out on manual. The got a second trainer who had an automatic. I thought I would dread it at first but I found it to be very nice. Boy is it smooth, much smoother than u can be at a manual. We would get over 7 mpg going on I-40 throuhg canlifornia and western arizona, fully loaded. That's pretty impressive. It knows exactly when to shift to get the best mpg and I think that's why a lot of companies are looking into them. Managing fule costs can make or break a company these days. I also found that over a full day of driving I was less fatigued with an automatic, there's less you have to do or worry about. Having said that, I missed shifting gears and feeling the power of the engine and being in control...nothing like that feeling, especially climbing a grade now I'm back to a manual and made the transition just fine. Either way, you're still just as much of a driver. You're in control, you make the life and eath decisions everday. The transmission is just that...a transmission.

The same arguments were used when road ranger trannies were coming out.

Goes to show that history can repeat its self.

What, like "I'll shift my range MY way. I don't need no steenkin' air shifting back box deciding how to do it for me!!!" kind of stuff?

(The air shifter *can* get out of whack and do ugly things you would never do with a stick in your hand. But I like only having one stick, thank you very much. I tried to drive a 4 and 4 or 5 and 4 or something, and that's too much work for me, Hoss.)

A manual can be just as smooth as any automatic.

It all depends on driver technique.
