Default Bad time to start a trucking career?

I know the economy is slow now, and freight is also slow. But the trucking industry seem s to pick up before any other segment of the ecomomy does, so do you'll expect it to grt worse, pick up in the near future, or what?

Default Bad Time?

Depends on the wagon you drag. Everybody needs to eat and kids outgrow clothes. Reefer shouldn't be bad. BOL

Reefer is the way to go. Not only can you carry reefer loads, but dry loads too. Usually the sector to feel the pinch in a slow economy is flatbed, as construction usually slows down when the economy does too.

But, with driver turnover as horrible as it is, if you have a clean background and a good MVR, you'll never have to worry about a driving job.

You deal with all the "lovely and friendly folks" who inhabit food warehouses and the lumpers and sit at the docks for hours on end.... You have a 2 AM appointment and if you are late....you wait til they get around to unloading you a couple of days later, and if you're on time....you might get lucky and only be there 6 to 12 hours.

I know someone is going to say different, and maybe some carriers have worked out deals to get their trucks in and out, but generally the mega carriers don't care how long you sit....they're not paying you for your sitting time....so who cares. On the other hand...if you can find one that will pay you detention automatically....who cares how long you sit?

Generally speaking the "suck" factor at food warehouses is off the chart!
