CDL-A in NC without driving school
I am looking to open a hotshot trucking company and do not plan on operating a semi truck. I have a Ram 3500 with a diesel engine and plan on purchasing a 40ft gooseneck trailer in the near future. Do I have to go to an actual classroom and training program in order to obtain my CDL-A license, or am I able to obtain my CDL-A permit and then just take a driving test with the equipment that I have?
From what I've read, it looks like I can proceed with the written test and get my permit, and then take the driving test. Any information or past experience on obtaining a CDL-A in the state of NC would be appreciated. I don't have the trailer yet and would honestly prefer to use the test facility's truck and trailer or rent a gooseneck trailer before I go.

You can take the written tests and obtain a permit with no skills tests involved. You may have to obtain a DOT medical card before you can test out or receive either the permits or hard copy CDL. You CAN buy the equipment, but you cannot drive it unless permitted and you have a CDL A holder with you. You will have to pass the hands on pre-trip inspection (no air brakes endorsement is required) and then pass the skills test to include backing and a road test.
*** Not sure what you are referring to when you talk about the test facility's equipment.. they (the state) doesn't have any equipment available for those taking driving tests. ***
