I agree with everyone here. What I did when I went into trucking is I used my GI bill to pay for it. I first went and called all the companies that hired new drivers right out of school and found out what they had to offer and what their requirements were as far as school was. After I talked to all the companies, I went to the local truck stop and talked to all the drivers I could find that worked for those companies. I took all the info I gathered and made a "Pros and Cons" list and figured out which company fit me best given the information I had obtained. I went to the school that company took and here we are.

It was pretty funny today, I went by my education office asking if I could use my ed benefits while on terminal leave, they didn’t know and promised an E mail by the end of the day. No answer today (good thing I don’t plain on retiring till June. I also asked her if she could get me a list of all the Jr Collages in Ohio and Michigan so I could see if they offered driving classes, since I had a lot of people saying to check them out, well she told me to find the collages myself and then she would check and see if they are accredited. I walked away remembering this was one of the reasons I was retiring

Since you are considering paying for it YOURSELF, what's the big deal letting a company pay for it? If you leave before the year is up, the worst case scenario is you pay for it yourself, same as you were planning to do in the first place.
It's not like they keep your first born. Not to mention the fact that many of them are charging inflated prices for their "schooling", and that training may not be transferrable to another company if you leave too soon.

"Hold on there Rev. TMC does not have it's OWN CDL school, but rather uses outside independent schools and community colleges whose training is accepted industry wide and whose prices can be compared independantly. We do not "inflate" the price as we are not getting the money, the CDL school is. Our pay is also some of the highest in the industry. Also a "sponsored student" is taken GOOD care of as TMC has a vested interest in them."
As I understand, TMC will secure a reduced rate from one of the schools they recommend.
