as far as having to "catch up with" you, i didnt know this was a contest? And why would i waste my time worrying about what someone else thinks of me?? Or compairing myself to you or anybody else? Made it thru 1 winter? maybe....but give another month, and i'll have 2 under my belt. I'll admit i'm a little over confident when it comes to my safety, cause i know what scares the Shatner out of me, and what doesn't. That is why i'll NEVER be one of these fools who parks their big truck in the ditch like the pictures posted on here. Why? Because I want to be sure i get home. Screw the customer getting their freight on time. Like an airline pilot flying a 777 full of passengers. S/he isnt worried about all the lives that are behind them. If they worry about getting themselves home at night safe, then the rest will follow. I know enough that when conditions force me to slow down to 20-30 mph, i'm giving myself a good football field space between me and the person in front of me. And if it gets much worse, i park it. Period. These "professional drivers" who park it in the ditch lose control because they either didnt give themselve enough space, didnt look far enough ahead of them and/or were driving too fast. period.
Second, you have one season under your belt and you know it all. No point in anyone else trying to improve your knowledge level. Have a nice day, and stay safe.

coming down 95 Tuesday night from Baltimore, the road was basically covered in snow and slush and guys is literally cussing other drivers out and bitchin over 19 about how they wanted to roll down the road 45/50 mph... i stayed in the right lane the most of the time and get out to pass cars and trucks from time to time, it took me 3 1/2 hours to get back from Jessup to Richmond when its usually 2 1/2... My take is, you can go as fast as you feel you if your safe, my safe speed the other night was between 30-35, others was even slower then me, but everyone has there comfort speed in conditions like this.. i must say this is my second winter and im very aware as i've ran across four or five winter storms in the past year.. i don't think im superman but i am aware on handling and other things while running in rough weather...

True, to a point. Ice at 0 degrees is not quite as slick as ice with a layer of water on it. One of the reasons so many drivers get into trouble when putting up a spray.

I am quite familiar with the way that water can be cooled to below freezing. First of all, it must be PURE water. Distilled water. The water that comes out of the sky is not pure. It's clear, and you can drink it without ill effects, but it is not pure. And, once it falls on the road surface, it is even less pure. Second, once the temp is below freezing, any kind of disturbance at all, and it will freeze solid instantly,even slamming a door on the opposite side of the room. The traffic on the highway gives the water the effect of molecules in motion, ie: running water does not freeze as easily. However, the traffic is seldom close enough together to have that effect, and secondly, the tire tracks are not in the same path, and the water that is not forced out of the way is allowed to freeze. So, your theory of super-cooling on the roadway is invalid. It still comes down to the temp of the road surface that the rain falls on. If it has been below freezing, the water will freeze anytime of the day, and no matter what traffic is doing. If it has been above freezing, the water will likely not freeze. If the temp has been right at the freezing mark, you are likely to see wet roads during the day, and at night when the sun goes down, it will freeze solid regardless what the traffic is doing.

Interesting comment. What is the effect of road salt on this equation. It has been my experience that the chemicals they put down significantly lower the freeze point. I have rolled down the road a few times at 10-15 degrees and seen wet roads after they were treated. Other times it has been slicker than owl snot at 25. Looking for and expert reason why?
as far as driving 'too fast', same holds true with driving on ice and going down hills. You can only go 'too fast' once. you can go 'too slow' as often as you want. and FYI...4184 was American Eagle, going from Indianapolis to ORD and it crashed in Roselawn, IN. happened on Halloween night 1994, and was an ATR-72. all abord were killed. The facts are on record, and are undisputed.

US 23 from Ann Arbor down to the Ohio line. The road was mostly snow covered. The zipper was visible but the outside lines weren't. Many cars and trucks seemed to think this meant they should be 80% in the right lane and 20% in the left. And then the ones who thought it would be good to do 25 in the left lane. Thought I must be in Florida or something, snow isn't exactly a novelty in Michigan but you would think some of these people had never driven in it before.
