This is a gross over-simplification of a long, drawn-out process. Handguns are "restricted" in Canada, usually the only way you will be able to take one in is if it's moving with your household goods into or out of Alaska, and that takes months of paperwork. Hunting rifles (bolt action being the most popular) require paperwork, too, but you're driving a laden CMV, not going to a guided hunt! I don't hunt but a couple friends at work go to New Brunswick every year to hunt bear. Not a problem, but then again they're not driving CMV's!

Keep it simple: If you're in a CMV do NOT take ANY guns into Canada!

When I ran Canada I used either a debit or credit card for most purchases. At the time U.S. dollars were worth considerably more than Canadian so I would usually leave tips in U.S. dollars. I think the Canadian dollar is worth as much or possibly more than the U.S. dollar now, so it may not make any difference.

Can't remember if it was company policy or if it was suppose to be Canadian Law; we were told to do a pre-trip and post trip (minimum 15 minutes), tractor and trailer license numbers and odometer reading entering and leaving Canada.
All of this was to be shown on our daily logs.
Any Canada drivers know if in fact you are required to show all this in your logs???

I only ever show a pre trip, never show post trip, and yes all odometer readings are required for the start and end of every day.

And licence plates of tractor and trailer are also required on the log sheet, NOT unit numbers!

You also must carry last 14 days of logs with you in ontario, and possibly anywhere in canada.

and also must have schedule 1 of the daily pre trip, it just tells you what to check on the truck, if you buy pre trip forms in canada that form usually comes with it.

Was told by Ontario MTO that its big fine for not having that.

I also log all border crossing in logbook.

Question: where in the DOT regs does it say no firearms in CMV, looked for it but couldnt find it. Had this conversation with a fellow driver once and I was always the opinion that there is no such federal reg, you might be in violation of company policy or local/state ordinances though.

My experience in Canada boils down to this. Driving in Canada aint much different than here except for Quebec. Road signs were in French, and most of the places I had to deliver, they pretended not to speak English. All the speed limits and distances are posted in kilometers instead of miles. If you are going to use cash instead of a credit card, stop at the border and go to the currency exchange and use Canadian money while your there. If you've got any left stop on the way back and exchange it for our currency.

You are correct, no DOT reg.
Company, local and state...where the problem may fall.

The big stamp that says " canada customs" is every drivers dream, whenever you see the officer getting the stamp out, you know you are gonna be good to go.

Do not ever leave customs without a canada customs stamp on your paperwork, big fines!!

If something is wrong with your paperwork at the booth, you will be sent inside to see the your customs broker first and then to canada customs to get the stamp!

You cannot leave without getting that stamp!

The US is weird, they don't even have a stamp, they just tell you when you can leave, and if they change there mind later, you really have no proof you were allowed to leave.

So thats what sucks about usa. Can't prove you were ok'd to leave, at least canada gives you a stamp to prove it.
