well you COULD, if you feel adventuresome and Lucky, take the Feather River Canyon road which you pick up East of Reno and runs the River Bottom paralleling Donner to the North. 53'rs are Illegal on it I think but rarely had a problem plus when Donner is shut down you can just zip on through. Some of the curves will make you dizzy and there's quite a few pull off areas so the 4 wheelers aren't held up. Whenever I heard on the CB that Donner was either closed or chaining up I took it.
I forget what the actual Highway number is though. Beautiful beautiful area-Bring your fishing pole with.

When you do go, try to make your way to a town called McCarthy, AK. It's at the edge of Wrangell-St Elias National Park.

When I hauled Logs up there you can take the Inside Passage and get on a ship in Seattle for the Trip.
Also AK has a Ferry service in Ketchikan that will take you on some beautiful rides. You can get some great Photos IF it's not Raining :P You can also hook up with some bush pilots that will fly you anywhere you'd like to go and if I remember right the prices were pretty reasonable.
