Thx Dues and BigDawg.
I'm tired of hard labor, but I could probably handle another year or two of it if I'm being paid well. (I've been in Landscaping for the past 4 years. Tired of moving dirt and sod!) I'll check out the food service companies. Actually, could anyone here point me in the right direction? I know of a few companies: Nicholas & Co., Sysco, as well as soda and beer distributors.

All of FedEx Ground is carried by contractors. You're under FedEx regulations, but you're working for an owner-operator. I drove for one for about 3 months. It may not be typical but he lied to FedEx and required you to lie in your log book. The run took between 12-15 hours, so he showed you exactly how to log it, shortening each leg of the trip to make it come in overall under the 11/14.............When he hired me I was told the route was being changed and split so each driver could do their part legally. When it became obvious it wasn't going to happen, I quit.
There OTR routes are teams, the line haul are singles. Pay wasn't great, equipment was over 1 million miles and no benefits. I'm sure other divisions of FedEx (Express, Freight) which use company drivers are legal and much better all around. Edited for spelling error

I'm thinking that FedEx Freight doesn't hire school grads, but I'm gonna check it out anyway. Ya' just never know. As far as food service goes in Utah... I'm not sure what is in your area, but check out US Food Service, Core-Mark (I know there is one in Salt Lake City), McLane, Sysco. You also might be able to find an LTL carrier that will hire you, money will probably suck at first but you have real potential to earn a lot down the road. USF Holland/etc, Yellow, Conway, Old Dominion, ABF, and I'm sure there are others I'm leaving out. Most of these will require experience, but maybe you'll get lucky.

I'm hoping I get lucky, one way or the other.
That's a lot of companies to check on in two weeks considering I am in school ten hours a day, but I'm gonna do it! I have already called Conway and Old Dominion. Conway was hiring folks without a CDL, and working them part time on the dock, training the other half of the day. Old Dominion just told me they usually hire experienced drivers, but if I wanted to submit an application... That's awesome though. I appreciate your help. |
