I can talk to someone 50 miles away, can you do that with a Coba 19?

My 2-yr old WalMart Cobra does the trick just fine.

I personally think a cheaper radio is better. You don't need the long range. Your really only interested in the people nearest to you anyways.

You could come on the radio and say, "hey flatbed, got your ears on" and 50 flatbed drivers within a 10 mile radius will say yup.

The Cobra 19 is a really seriously noisy radio though. I've got to take a crowbar to my wallet one of these days and trade up for something with noise cancelling technology. My old radio was a Cheapass from Wal-Mart, but the auto-noise-cancel button was marvelous.

I'm being a serious hard ass penny pinching spendthrift these days though, so I'm trying to save up enough points on my "I Hate Waiting in Line at Love's and Wish My Fuel Card Worked Somewhere Else" card to buy one, and then spend a little to get it worked over, but not really tricked out.

No point buying anything too fancy. I'm working on my escape plan. If I pinch enough pennies, I think I can get to a point where I only have to run if I feel like it, and I can take a lot more time off. Maybe go for a 7/7 deal or something like that.

But that's neither here nor there. You may resume your regularly scheduled conversation.

Yea, I think my 857, tuned just right, would melt that Magnum. But the FCC may be looking for me to pull my license.

Just Joshin, don't go postal.

Oh to answer your question Cobra 29 or Uniden 78 should work fine.

Try chatting with a mate in Austrailia with only 1/2 watt, then you can brag! Those over powered radios are basically useless, except to aggrevate the guy parked next too you in a truck stop. Never could understand 2 drivers talking to each other, less that 100 yards apart, pushing 100 or more watts swing. Not to mention the fines the FCC has been passing out for modified 10 meter radios being used on 11 meter (CB). What was it, 2 months ago when PennDot and the FCC set up at a rest area and confiscated over 200 radios, issued $8000 in fines and 6 arrest. Do not think it is worth it! My 22 year old Midland will talk over 10 miles easy, and the cover has only been removed to blow the dust out.

The $80 - 150.00 radios do just fine. Especially when the correct coax andd antenna are used, and properly tuned (SWR) for the installation.

Later, gonna duck from the flying bullets.

Hard to go wrong with the good ole reliable Cobra 29

If anyone needs to talk to me 10,20 or 50 miles away....well they should know my phone number and not my radio handle.
