1973, got what was then called a chauffeurs license was handed the keys to an 18 wheeler and hauled dynamite into the mines in northern Quebec on a part time basis while in the air force. I drove crash rescue and fire trucks for a living on a daily basis. Lots of different part time driving jobs over the next 12 years then I left the AF in 1985, that was when the armstrong steering cab over with rubber blocks instead of springs became part of my life for a short time. After that I learned to check out the equipment before I said yes to a job. Driving has been a big part of my life since.

[quote="sanchez498"]Your welcome yoopr. Forgot to ad my first truck was a 1973 International cabover with a 318 detroit and a 13 speed.

OMG.... I remember those motors, those were the only thing that would start when it was 30 below zero. I hated the dam things but they would start in the cold weather. (blast from the past)

You want a blast from the past. Try a 220 detroit with no turbo and a air starter. Or maybe and old GMC cabover ups truck with an air clutch.

believe it or not but that 220 could fly if needed

I have NO CLUE why engine makers take away the great features they used to have-Remember the engine compression release Lever for Cold starting--that was the Cat's Meow but they got rid of that too

I haven't been driving long...and I hope that I'm not going to be driving long enough to be 'qualified' to be giving anyone advice on trucking.

Tom..................that's exactly how I did it back in 1979..........had a Chauffeurs license and CONNED my way into a job with Ardmore Farms. Heck, I'd NEVER even been in a truck, much less drive one..............to make a long story short...........my first load was 90,000 of frozen orange juice (we always ran overweight) from DeLand, FL to Chicago.....basically, they said "Here's your truck, drop the load at United Airlines in Chicago, have a safe trip, Goodbye!!!".

It's been an ADDICTION ever since.............
