P&D
What exactly is pickup and delivery? I know there are linehauls, but what do P&D drivers do, exactly? Is that city driving; if so, then are they the type of drivers to deliver freight to peoples houses; and what type of trucks do they drive?

p/d drivers
generally speaking p/d drivers drive single axle day cabs for there manuverbility I pick up from factorys and wharehouses both large and small and deliver to wharehouses factorys and sometimes construction sites and homes.

pickup and delivery drivers deliver all there freight then they get a list of stops they need to make for their pickups. They usually drive a day cab and pull a pup or 48 or 53. once they do all their pick ups the freight comes back the to terminal and the trailer is broken and all the freight is then moved by line haul to get to it's destination.
some times p&d is done with doubles, take 2 emptys for them and bring 2 loaded trailers back.

For many regular customers an empty is spotted and then picked up and replaced with another at a designated time. Depending on the day we will get 3-6 vans worth of Donnelly. On a busy day its a continuous stream of guys making a round trip.
We also use a smaller straight truck with a lift gate for residential deliveries, car dealerships etc. Even a two axle with a pup feels HUGE when you are backing around shiny new cars. There is also appointment freight, where we put only a customers freight in a pup, drop it off and retrieve the empty the next day. This allows us to not have to deal with some of the bigger time suckers like the K-Mart DC. At my terminal we will occasionally use triples in P&D for some of the outlying areas like Fernley. |
