If you're a new driver you will do a road test the first day of orientation. After your training period is over you will be tested again before they assign you a truck.

When I was hired I did a 3 day orientation, they handed me the keys to my truck, the trainer jumped into the passenger seat, we went about 15 miles in and around Wichita Falls, drove back into the yard, he got out and I headed out to get my first load.

In big companies it's the luck of the draw, it takes staff and availability, don't know DOT rules on such..At werner I hear it goes both ways, in fact I finished training in short of 5 weeks and did a road test, my wife did training in around 8 weeks and did NOT take a road test.....but my advice would be that YOU DRIVER! BE READY! and confident to do that TEST drive around some local streets, and back that 53 foot trailer smoothly into a hole, do not hesitate when backing to get out and look as often as you can...... DUDE.!!!!!...you should be ready for that before you bring your dangerous azz out on the road anyway...C/MON

Im really interested in the orientation. Did they make u take a test before hired? The reason why Im asking is that I went to school on a WIA grant and wasnt particular about the school. The school was horrible I even got fed up and left. Im now thinking about going back. But, the school is so crowded most students only get maybe 8 hours on the yard and no more than 2 hours on the road. If most companies dont do a driver test at orientation it doesnt matter. But, if they do im almost thinking about spending my own money and going to a decent community college and PTDI approved school.

Dude,
What company you going to? Most truck driving schools goal is to get your money, get you to pass your test for CDL, then send you to a company while your just good enough to be dangerous after minimul driving, backing, and pre-trip education many of these schools, the company does the hiring proccess at orientation, then they will send you off with a trainer for as long as 275 driving hours or 5-8 weeks whicever is quickest. Orientation is about how they run their operation to the truck from dispatch, saftey, company policy, logs, benefits , etc.
Your driving test would come after you have been signed off as a qualified driver by your trainer(s), then your company may or may not give you the driving test.
Good Luck!
