To my knowledge....all radar detectors are also transmitters....and their emissions are what are detected. Keep this in mind....it is against Federal Rules to have a "radar detector" in a CMV. Not only would a CMV driver be fined, but the device would be confiscated.

Also, even if someone came out with an "undetectable radar detector", on Monday at 8AM, more than likely by 5PM that same day there would be an "undetectable radar detector detector"......

Remember: Discretion is the better part of valor.
Skywalker, While technically radar detectors are NOT transmitters. However, they do radiate a signal that can be detected.

There are ways that the so called "detector - detector" will not detect the presents of a radar detector. But to my knowledge no one builds such a unit.

They do, the Beltronics STI is undetectable. It's been documented several times in tests. Neither the VG-2 nor the SPECTRE can pick it up at all.

I'm going to invent a radar detector detector detector. anybody want to invest?
Actually, it's already been done, sort of. Some older model radar detectors with VG-2 stealth capabilities would alert to the presence of the VG-2 interceptor and would shut down the detector to "shield" it momentarily and would power up for a few seconds to check to see if the VG-2 unit was still present. Nowadays, radar detector makers have changed their oscillator design which means the RF leakage is at a frequency that was outside the VG-2's range, making them truly have "stealth" capabilities.

just my luck. then I think I will invent a machine that uses that some sort of tape to play songs, I think I will call it a cassette player

When I was at USXpress I had a roadside inspection. The officer thought that the Eaton Vorad sitting on the dash was a radar detector. I had to prove to him what it was before he'd let me pull out. I told him to stand at the door where he could see the Vorard and I had to get out and walk in front of the truck to set the thing off.

For the officer's sake - it DID look like a radar detector.

This post makes the most sense of all of them!

Better yet, DON"T get on the road, if your only thought is breaking the law! I make good money without having to break any laws.

It amazes me the energy that people will expend, to figure out how to get away with breaking the law. If one were to exert the same energy into doing things legaly, they would be less stressed, and in most cases, have much more money in their pockets at the end of the week. Wouldn't you say!

I will wave at ya when you go by!
You know....of all the posts in this thread.....this one makes the most sense. The ones above by Uturn and countryhorseman that is.

I drive a truck, with a Cummins ISM engine, pulling a chemical tanker that won't go faster than 68 mph.....unless its downhill with a full tank....yet I drive the speed limit wherever I go, unless its higher than 68, but yet I'm always at the gate early.....and I really don't give a "rats ass" where "smokie" is or what the "coops" are doing.... If you just do it right and do it legal....you have no worries, right? No reason to. 8)

You should have told him he had to prove it WAS a radar detector, not you have to prove it wasn't.

This trucker uses it and is dumb enough to put it on film and put it on the internet. Not to smart. Scroll down to "trucker gadget geek" and watch the video. The second link is the drivers video.

Ran across this older post and I just had to post my little story. So I'm on patrol the other day on the interstate (Ex-long haul, current part time driver, full time deputy sheriff), and I've got my CB on 19, as I usually do. I hear these two drivers conversing and as I approach two trucks from behind, it's obvious that these two trucks are the ones doing the talking. So the closer I get (I'm running opposing-moving radar), every time I activate my radar, I hear a very loud "beep, beep, beep" in the background as I get closer to the front truck when he's got his mic keyed up. So I hang near him for a bit, and every time he keys up I hit my radar and listen to his detector go off. So after a couple minutes this driver is going absolutely batty telling everyone out there that there's a "Bear" somewhere close and he's "takin' pictures".

So this driver (who happens to be driving a DOT foods truck), is talking all kinds of crap on the radio about how his super high tech radar detector is paying for itself time and time again and that he's never going to get caught speeding. I let this go on for a few minutes because, frankly, it's damn funny. After a bit I finally pick up the CB mic and the following conversation ensued...

Me: I tell ya what drivers, I think I've got a pretty good idea.

Super-driver: I have a lot of ideas too.

Me: Yeah, but mine is a good one.

Super-driver: Well what's your idea.

Me: Well, you know I think it'd be a great idea that if you're gonna run a radar detector, and it's going off like a dog with it's tail caught in the door, ya probably shouldn't be keying up the CB with it in the background, especially when the detector tells you that I'm real close. Because, every time I hit this switch in my car and turn on my radar, I can hear your little detector screamin' at you in the background.

Super-driver: Good thing you don't know which truck I'm in.

Me: Yeah, that would be good for you. So does DOT foods issue those detectors to you or did you have to buy that one on your own?

Super-driver: (I guess he had nothing to say at this point)

So now the other drivers start giving this poor guy so much grief on the radio that I'm sure he turned it off and maybe even sold it at the next truck stop.

I would never give a driver a hard time over a radar detector. Yeah, I know you can't have them in CMV's, but most of us really don't look that hard at trucks. That being said, don't be a moron and broadcast the evidence that you have one. I just thought that was a funny story and wanted someone else to hear it.
