Default Rounding the minutes when logging, is it legal?

Say I start driving at 3:09. I would log that as starting driving at 3:15, since it's past the halfway mark of the 15 minute block.

Likewise, if I stopped driving that day at 8:07, I would log it that I stopped driving at 8:00.

Our jobs are based on 15 minute blocks, so whichever side of the 7.5 minute block you're on is the time you should round up or down to, right?

My question is...is this legal? I can't see how it wouldn't be...but maybe I'm wrong. If utilized properly, it seems like a good way to save up valuable work hours.

I logged like that for eight years and never had a problem.

I would log 8:15 but that is just me.

Technically it's still on the low side of the 15 minute block, but I see what you're saying...to be safe...and I do that. But just to save myself a few minutes every day I try to leave about 5-6 minutes before the actual time I've logged as leaving. And stop 5-6 minutes after the time I log as stopping. It adds up quick and can save you hours on your 70.

I see your point on saving hours. I run local so I never come close to 70 hours. But like I said, been logging like that for eight years and never have been questioned by the DOT or any safety departments. I won't worry about that.

That's the way I always did it and never had a problem. Also When first leaving out for the day, after PTI if it was say 8:05 I would wait unitl 8:08 and log as 8:15 and start driving.

Yeh, that's what I've been doing. It seems like the only way to legally save yourself some time. Good to know it's legal. I thought it had to be, just wanted to make sure.

You've been driving for about a year now.....and your asking this question now?

And you work for JB Hunt?

I know how strict they are about the logs.... I can't beleive that no-one has brought this up before now with you.....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

i think it's ok just as long as it's within 15 minutes of what actually happened.

I would personally, however, only round up just to be safe. The reason being that if you pass through a toll, most toll reciepts have the time stamped on them. Toll reciepts MUST match your logs. If you pass thru a toll and the reciept says 8:07 and you logged going off duty at 8:00 there is a descrepancy.

However, if i round up to 8:15, i'm ok.

But i think you're probably ok doing it your way.

How does this have anything to do with me working for JB Hunt? Give it a rest, driver.

I worked for Werner and they use paperless logs, so I never had to worry about rounding up/down. I kind of assumed it IS legal, but just wanted to make a post to be sure about it, and I think it's a good question for new drivers to have answered as well.

I'm a truck driver just like you. We're both happy and that's all that should matter.
