Ohh by the way, YES adding air to an overheated brake can make it catch fire. I have seen it many time being in the fire service. You see in order for fire to take place it has to have several factors in place. This is called the Fire Tetrahedron. HEAT,FUEL,OXYGEN and A Self Sustained Chemical Reaction. You take away any one of those and fire CAN NOT HAPPEN. This is why constant pressure works. It does not allow Oxygen to enter the heated area. I could go into more detail but that would be overkill!

I really don't know how you guys do it without a Jake. I've already been down 3 10% grades since I started driving last year. I just went through the pass in the Grand Tetons with a weight of 60,000. Jakes on full screaming away in 5th gear and still stabbing the brakes every 10 seconds or so. I've also learned to turn on the engine fan which helps drag down the engine even more before over revving.

If you have steel drums and a 200 gallon tank behind the cab you can squirt water on the brakes.

There is a lot of good advice on this thread, but what it boils down to is knowing your equipment and proper gear selection.

Take all the advice you hear from oldtimers gleen it and stuff it back into your brain a time will come when that advice will come into play.

Well, here's my .02 after reading 7 pages of posts. I started commercial driving in '76. First 9 years was doubles/ triples down Cabbage daily (1st 3 years driving tractors w/ no engine brake).

It is true they used to teach steady brake application but now have adopted the stabbing technique. My experience to this day is that I have tried both methods and the stab/release method is the one I use. I have pulled chemical tanks the past 6 years so I know a bit about using the correct gear & keeping your truck in control.

I am sorry to see that this thread had degraded into a pissing contest with ssoutlaw as point man. Sir, you ARE condescening. Can't you just express your views without the insults?

Yes sir, I can. It starts out good and always ends up like this. As far as the COLIN replies, you would have to read back at his posts to understand why I don’t like him. Ya I push the point across a little to hard sometimes, well maybe more than sometimes and for this I am sorry, but I have watched this industry for the last 30 yrs be polluted by new drivers, not all new drivers, but you get my drift. I will admit, I don’t like change and I am set in my ways and think all new drivers should be taught to be a DRIVER not a steering wheel holder! Thank you for calling me on the pissing contest, I will concede to your point. Have a great rest of your weekend...

Me thinks you don't know the difference.

In almost 10 years, I would guess I have seen almost as much as you have in 30 years. Heavy loads, extreme hail, snow, fog, hills, etc. You don't hold the monopoly on experience or experiences.

For the record, I will never use slow and steady pressure again. It's the way I learned back in 1995, but I learned better at a later date.

I personally find it difficult to take any advice from someone who acts as you do.

Nothing like a broken record. Brava! Next you'll want to put a frog down my shirt, right? 4th graders are the best, indeed.

What’s wrong with that?? If you don’t like how I tell you about it, OH WELL, no skin of my nose! I think your definition of condescending is blowing smoke up someone’s ass and agree with everything they say, and don’t say anything that will piss them off!!! Well guess what, that’s what your mom and dad did to you, and guess what? I aint them....lol Have a wonderful day!!
I think you misunderstood my sentence: "You don't hold the monopoly on experience (amount of years driving) or experiences (things you've seen while driving)." I hope that makes more sense.

The problem as I see it is when you share advice, you dish out advice in a manner that gets people's hackles up. I'm not the only one obviously. It's not a matter of being young and arrogant. I take advice all the time from more experienced people.

Try a dictionary. You are condescending to a tee. Maybe you mean appeasing. I sure didn't.

I'm not sure what you're saying about my parents, but based on your track record I'm guessing it's not nice. Well played. Brava!

I think you misunderstood my sentence! I think you could say that having a corner or a monopoly is the same thing!!!
Mr. Colin, just keep sitting in your living room playing armchair truck driver and leave the helping the new drivers to people who still have what it takes to do this JOB!!!! You don’t even drive, I guess you couldn’t handle it anymore...lol I still don’t like you so I will sit back not say more to you until the next time you come out of hibernation to play the game of armchair TRUCKDRIVER....lol What ever you do COLIN stay out of the middle lane, and quit blocking traffic when you go into your virtual truck driver mode...lol

Wait a minute stop, EDIT.....
Why would I want to put a frog down your shirt, are you GAY or something? There is nothing I would like to do with you or do to you, except 1 thing and this will land me in jail. Just keep the frog thing for you and your good buddies out in the sticks of Washington. Go pick some fruit, its all around you where you live.....lol Now if you think this is acting like a 4th grader, let me tell you young man, you’re wrong. Its picking a fight!!! Get it straight!!!
Now this is just sad. The issue I had with you previously with my sentence about experience(s) has nothing to do with "monopoly" or "corner". You appear to creating an issue over a word where they both mean the same thing. What I've been trying to say is that the time (aka experience) you spent driving or seeing or doing thing (aka experiences) while doing that driving; you're not the only one with lots of both. Is that clear enough for you? Forget 'experience' and 'experiences'.

If you go back and re-read my first post, I was referring to an experience (DOH, there's that word again), not telling anyone what to do, or what you call "armchair truck driver". After that, I had a problem with your method for giving advice. It is condescending and could easily be given out with less attitude.

1) Making fun of my name - 4th grade bullsh!t, so think back to 4th grade. Putting a frog down someone's shirt is a 4th grade prank. I am asserting you are acting like a 4th grader. Is that clear enough?

By the way, threats of violence do not help your position.

I knew what you meant, and conceded to your point then went on to expand on it. Give it a rest! I also know what you meant by the 4th grade remark but thought you could have gone somewhere else with it than the shirt. Maybe I do get a little condescending after you tell someone over and over again, but I still have the experience to help the new driver and I would NEVER steer them wrong! You will notice the insults started to fly when YOU came into the picture, be it right or wrong, you knew the effect it would have, so you are part of this funny little game! There were never any threats of violence, but that was smart of you to bring up. The only time believe me, I would make a threat is to someone’s face, not the Internet. Now if you would like to discuss this more, maybe PM would be best as this thread is getting out of control as another driver has said, if not oh well to each his own!!

What we NEED is a runaway "posting" ramp!!

Talk about "losing your brakes!"

We need a sign that reads: "Truckers: 100% DEgrade ahead - Sharp tongues - Twisting words - No Center stripe - Rough road - Check your BRAKES!!! "
