I wanst aware there was some sort of riff between dump drivers and OTR drivers, I guess I never gave pause for 2 seconds to give a flying crap.

But I leave the jake on high for most of the time, running heavy loads over hilly areas.

No biggier.

Sometimes in starting on a hill your truck will slow down faster than the engine when you go to shift and putting the jake on stage one will help you shift and not have to crawl up the hill in low or first 8) . I otherwise leave it off when not needed unless it's set up for one of the alternate modes where it only comes on when you brake and goes off when you release the brake, or comes on when you brake and kicks out when you accelerate - or of course when using the cruise control in hilly terrain. I think Cat engines are the only ones that do the alternate modes? And oh yah - real trucks bend in the middle  .

Hummm, I saw this one late. I drive a HD tow truck. I scale at 66k when I'm NOT towing anything. When I tow a 80k T/T or a 120k 8 axle concrete pumper, I tend to use the engine brake, the service brakes, a boat anchor, and anything else I can to slow down/stop. I leave the J/B on all the time because I never know when I'll need to slow down.

I leave mu jake on low- this just makes shifting quicker especially when skipping gears. Also helps you hear the engine rpm to know when she's ready to slide in the hole.

My jake is on 24/7, i never shut if off, I was tought how to drive with it on all the time and this way I don,t have to reach over and flip the damn switch. some say don,t use it on wet roads or in snow, I say poppycock, I have no trouble driving in any weather with it on.... but if your not sure then leave it off.. better too be safe with your driving habits not mine...

When I was first out as a Solo, there where plenty of times I forgot I had my jakes on when I was shifting and ended up with whiplash because of it... So I turn my jakes off when it comes to hills.

I too was told not to use them in the rain, ice, and snow. But, I typically run them in rain and snow. It is like anything else with driving, your in control of the vehicle, and if you cannot do it safely, then don't do it at all!
