Starting CDL School on Monday, 12/4
I've been looking around at various companies' web sites to try to narrow down who I sent applications to. At this point, the one on top of my list are two companies.
May Trucking. Cypress Truck Lines Anyone have any comments about them, good, bad, ugly? Thanks, Dok

Doktari ... I worked for May trucking out of Layton, Utah back in 94-95. Their a good company, great equipment, nice people. I'd still be there but it was necessary for me to take some time off the road for a while. .. As for the person who syl77dar came across - - there's people like that driver in every company. Go for the best training you can get and keep an open mind.
Good luck.

No clue on either company, though I have seen their trucks. When you get towards the end of your training, the recruiters normally pay a visit.
Keep an open mind, and ask allot of questions. I would even go as far as running over to the TA truck stop and talk to some of the drivers there. You may find some Cypress and May drivers to talk to. Hopefully if you do this, you won't run into a blow hard that will tell you a pack of lies. This new bunch out here is a real different breed then a few years ago. Choose wisely, and use some common sense. And take a look at flat bedding. You might just wind up running locally, and the pay is much better then vans or reefers. Although, it is a little harder work. Good luck.

Truckin
Doktari, all I know is Cypress Truckin is in south Tampa by you. They south of Gandy and just east of So. West Shore. They bought Ploof truckin a few years ago and have their main terminal in Jacksonville. They do alot of flatbedding for construction jobs. The only problem I would see (and I worked in construction long ago) is waiting to be unloaded. Like, if your hauling trusses for a bridge, they won't unload you untill your truss is ready to be placed in it's final spot on that particular bridge under construction. If you visit their tampa location you will see alot of old Ploof trucks sitting around and their 'newer' trucks. I don't know how old their trucks are or if they pay by the hour since they are so local. Never heard of May. Hope this helps.
I'm in a CDL school right now in St. Pete. at PTEC. and would like to get on OTR someplace when I finish, but there's not a whole lot here in Tampa Bay as I guess it is so far south. Every company I have checked with so far want experience before hiring for OTR, so I guess I'll be working for somebody locally like Cypress for a year or two. Unless I wanna go with somebody like JB Hunt or Swift, which are low on my list.

Thanks for the input gang.
The thing that appeals to me about Cypress is that is fairly local, and they promise you home every weekend. What I like about May is that it's not local and I'd be out for more than a week. All kidding aside, I just want a good company, one that treats their drives like people, and one that pays decently. I'm kinda leaning towards OTR more than local to start but I'm sure that there will come a time when I mainly want local. Looking forward to getting going though. 7 am tomorrow morning is the start of the class. 7am - 6 pm. Long days but only 3 weeks long. I've spent over 21 months underwater while in the navy, I think I can handle this training. Thanks again, Dok |
