Turning down truck speed
#41
I can certainly understand the frustration of having your wings clipped. However, during difficult economic times, we must all make sacrifices. If you want your company to be loyal and supportive of you, then you must be loyal and supportive of the company. Traveling a few miles per hour slower and cutting down your idle time is a small thing to ask. It could save your company a lot of money and also save your job.

i dont know, GMAN. you dont think the big boys make enough money as it is? cost cutting has to be from the drivers wallets and phisical/mental recovery time? that extra 30-60 minutes could be spent resting, or calling mom or the kids or showering or just some quiet time. but instead , the have to spend it on the road getting passed by other drivers getting to an already packed truckstop first. i disagree completely

And even if you could do 70 mph average and 11 hours a day, you would run out of hours before you could realize your so-called extra $770.00 a month! So let's get real, and apply your 5ht grade math to real world truck driving and not fantasy land! Oh, your company will not have the freight or the ability for you to max out your exta $770.00 on the other hand either! If ya don't like the rules in this playground, go find another! The economy is what it is, and everyone, including every truck driver out their, will need to make sacrifices and adjustments to survive!

Get a clue. BOTH of you will be LUCKY if you get $770 a week! Do you know of some new method of OFFLOADING your trailer while you are speeding down the highway? Or LOADING it? You're gonna get a couple of loads a week, mostly low miles to start! You're gonna TAKE the money they GIVE you and be happy for it! I don't really remember the BASIC math taught in the 5th grade.... of course "I" didn't have to struggle to pass the 5th grade! I DID sleep through 11th grade Algebra, and STILL passed with a grade of 98! Tests are REALLY easy IF you understand math! (BTW, the 2% was deducted for not turning in my USELESS homework assignments on time!) I was then exempt from all future math classes until I got to college Trig. The FIRST night, I had to CORRECT the professor after he wrote out a two blackboard trig equation! Following along as he wrote, I noticed that he transposed pie over 2 when it should have been 2 over pie! I "exempted" myself from the rest of HIS class!  You don't even WANT to question MY intelligence! And, you MIGHT not want to question my (albeit limited) experience! I can drive FAST, or I can drive Slow! Either way, I'll get the same number of loads per week, and I suspect that is the same for MOST "solo" drivers! Therefore, I'll get the same number of miles per week. Yeah, it takes longer at a slower speed..... but no longer than getting caught behind a slower truck! Most of YOU will do that most of the time, JUST because you are a lousy driver! YOU are the ones without a clue! If EITHER of you could max out your governed mph, I'd be amazed! And if you don't know how to "speed average" your logbook, you're not really serious about making money anyway! What you two know about trucking, and what you are talking about, wouldn't fill a THIMBLE! Get in the SLOW lane, rookie! And put on your flashers!

There is no goofy calculations.. Its simple. Speed multiplied by CPM equals your rate of pay.
No, CPM is the only simple part. Speed is a little different... What is the quadratic equation that describes the acceleration curve of your truck? How about my truck? What is the constant that you use to account for traffic jams and the corresponding reduction in average speed? What about mountains? If you lose 10mph going up, do you know how much speed you would need to gain coming back down to get back to your baseline average? What about lines at fuel stops? What about rainy weather, where everybody is slowed down? Man can you make a mess of something so simple.

Unfortunately I get paid by speed, the faster I go the more I get paid.
Regardlees of the speed? Speed is one of the two factors of my pay. evinrude I KNOW what you are saying.... you think you'll get MORE trips per week in if you aren't slowed down by a few mph. But..... I just don't THINK so! Yours is the type of mentality that causes drivers to NOT take breaks to clear their heads, circulate their blood, and calm their nerves. You are an accident just waiting to happen! My truck is governed at 67 mph and my neighbour is governed at 55 mph. We both leave on Sunday afternoon and do roughly 3000 miles. I back home on Thursday and he is back on Friday morning. So who is on the road longer for the same pay? With good legal speed I get to my destination quicker and get to relax longer and get some exercise in. About the part that I am an accident waiting to happen. I see it differently. My truck can do most speed limits. Trucks that do 55 mph in a 65 zone are causing back ups, other vehicle to make unnecessary lane changes, therefore causing more chances of accident. evinrude
