While it varies a little from state to state, you will need:
Chains to cover all tires on a single drive axle or chains for the outside tires of all drive axles Chains for the outside wheels on two axles for the trailer. So you will need: 6 single chains or 2 double chains and 2 single chains. If you go to your favorite search engine and type in chain requirements or the area you are wondering about and chain law (or chain requirements) you will get all the info you need.

I think he meant Requirements for different passes in BC-Maybe I'm wrong. Just like Donner and other passes out west requirements change with the weather where some times you have to chain more and sometimes you have to chain less.

I carry 5 sets. That has been able to cover me for all the states so far. Haven't been in Canada in a while, so I'm not familiar there. But 5 sets of chains will see you in all states here.

We run out west and have never had a problem. They ask and I have no qualms saying we've got chains in the trailer. I do. They just aren't tire chains. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.

V-bars, straight chain. The law says that if you put chains on your vehicle, you must chain all the tires on that axel. If you have a five axel, then you usually only need to chain one driven axel. If you are pulling chains, then you probably need to chain both driven axels. My basic rule is that I will not chain to run flat ground. If chains are needed for flat ground, park the truck. Chains are for hills. I also keep the truck in third gear to keep wear down and make them last as long as possible. |
