Where's the freight?

Hmmmm....i pulled an MT from south of Chicago up to Green Bay today. When most drivers were parked in truck stops. Even saw a JB Hunt trailer 50ft down in a ditch, rolled onto its right side. Truck was long since gone. Weather wasnt pretty, but i took the load for two reasons. 1) good experience (oh and i had to bobtail from Morris, Illinois to Dwight, Il. to get the MT.) and 2) the load delivers in Nebraksa. if i didnt take this, getting home for christmas probably wasnt going to happen.
But according to Snowman, i'm willing to guess that 'not being home once in a month is part of the job'. How many of you stay out for a month, and not b!tch about not ever getting home. http://www.classadrivers.com/forum/a...1&d=1229921639

Try Sherman or Elk when a gust will change lanes for you LOL Or be on the top of a clover leaf in LA empty with the Santa Ana winds blowing and your jaw hurts from gritting your teeth before you get off it. I thought I was going over the other day on top of a clover leaf empty. The pucker factor was 9.999999 Scottt is right. The Santa Anna's blow it up to 120 mph. First time I've ever seen people tying down the palm trees. No, I don't want to take an empty trailer through that. A 53 loaded with 7,000 pounds of baby furniture was bad enough. Not sure I'd even want an empty flatbed. But, 30 mph in WI is not bad. They're generally not bad on keeping the roads open. If you're going to fly with one hand on the EJECT LEVER, you're going to find yourself bailed out of the business before long. You can not turn down many loads before they stop giving you loads and just leave you sit till you quit. You're asking now, "WHERE'S THE FREIGHT". Why? They're not giving you much of it anymore because you're going to turn it down anyhow? Why even bother offering it to you if you're only going to say "NO"? No wonder when someone says something less than flattering about Swift, you take it as a personal affront. There are two things the wind will do to your trailer that is a sure sign of trouble. One, you find your trailer going up on 4 wheels, with the other 4 off the road. or, two. Your trailer slides, either into the other lane, or onto the shoulder while you are driving. And, either one can happen in the middle of summer. It does not have to be winter. (The first ten minutes of rain, with a strong cross wind, on fresh blacktop can be as slick as wet ice.)

GMAN, i can understand your point of view about cheap freaight. Partly the reason i dont like unions.
The rates are poor because of the economy, not because shippers take cheap loads. Your explain how the rates will go up if shippers just refuse to take those loads. SOMEONE will move their freight one way or another. But say the cargo just sits.....it will just make the economy WORSE than it already is. Because what will happen, is the law of supply and demand will kick in. Companies dont get their goods in, thus the supply goes down, demand remains the same and the price will just go up. Then people wont buy because the cost is outrageous. Don't make sense to me. I think you mean that carriers or owner operators take cheap loads, not shippers. We live in a supply and demand society. When the capacity goes down (trucks) below supply (freight) then prices rise. Right now we have a lower supply of freight due to the time of year and slower than usual economic situation. We also have more trucks than is needed to haul the freight. Desperation by some carriers and owner operators keep those cheap loads moving. These carriers and owner operators take what is offered just to keep moving. And actually, the price to move onions was up part of this year due to a limited capacity of trucks. The area where they were being hauled from and from whom was also a factor. Supply and demand works. I remember an auto dealer who told me something that I have never forgotten. He told me that if you want to find out the true value of anything go to an auction. The selling price is the actual value of that product. The value is set at what the consumer or buyer is willing to pay.

Naaaaaaaah Gary....the "relief cooler" sat inconspicuously on the center of the rear seat in the rental car. It duck walked it's way from one car to the other...so that the"outbound" crew had cool refreshment in hand as they made their way to the hotel and a shower. :smokin::smokin:

I bobtailed from Evanston WY to Vernal UT one night in 1980. In an International Paystar 5000. It was snowing hard enough that it was tough to see...and the wind was blowing its typical 25 to 30 down the Flaming Gorge. Flaming Gorge isn't anything at all like I-94 between Chi-Town and Green Bay however.:zzz:

Kevin, I just don't get it....
On one hand you are talking about standing on principle, refusing loads for safety.... And now you are bragging about the rough conditions you're driving through... Seems as if you're trying hard to get everyone's approval. Please, you don't have to try so hard! I can tell you are off to a good start, but please stop trying to act like you are the trucking GOD. Believe me, people will respect you more around here for admitting what you don't know, rather than insisting you know everything. And, BTW...not trying to offend you or anything...but that avatar isn't helping matters...kind of looks like a 13 year old trying to appear badass.....
