All I know is they are a division of freightliner and they stopped making them years back.
I also bevlieve they are fuel guzzlers getting around 5mpg.
Please coorect me if I am wrong.

Are their parts accessible OTR just like freightliners at every TA.

Western stars are still being made, it's the sterling brand that has stopped. WS's stopped being made in Canada a while back and that's when the quality went down. They are very solid trucks, but heavy. You see them a lot pulling sticks out of the woods(log hauling).

They are definitely a higher quality brand compared to other freightliner products. I know some that are very happy with their stars. I'd say the quality comes close to, but not quite, a paccar product. That is from word of mouth, not direct observation.

 

I am looking at a 2000 WS.It gas 10sp with 355 rears and has a 500 detroit series 60 that has been rebuilt.he is selling it dirst cheap but before I waste my time on a DYNO charge I wanna make sure they are not the 5mpg long-nose-hooded trucks.Allan, when you say heavy, do you consider 19kibs heavy for a truck with half gallon tanks?

You can connect the ECM to a computer and see what type of mpg the previous owner was getting. I have an International with a CAT, 10 speed transmission and 354 rears and average 6.29. It may be a little more aerodynamic than the Western Star, but I would expect your mileage to be somewhere around 6, but the best way is to check the ECM. It may not be completely accurate since no two drivers drive the same. You do have about as many flat surfaces with a WS as with a 379 Peterbilt. They do make a nice looking truck. Most owners with whom I have spoken like them.

 

Sounds almost exactly like steve booths truck, or is that a dirty word around here? Some of the western stars were really heavy, especially with the large sleeper.

 

They do.
We have a Western Star dealer here, and they have them all over their place. Western Star trucks look like they are 'blown up'.

The older Stars are a good product. Get the truck and engine inspected before you purchase it. Take oil samples of the engine, transmission and rear end oil to verify if it a "good deal" or not! Could save you thousands in the long run.
