No matter what brand you choose, it is critical that you do your homework and check it out.

The guy had just bought the truck 4 months ago and decided to sell it when the contract fell through.I just don't like buying a truck from someone who hadn't put much miles on it.Come to find out, the truck weighs 20k full of fuel and gets 5.2mpg.I just cannot deal with that.
The guy has never worked with the truck.Getting a dyno on the truck will be a waste.I gave up on it.

Most of the hoods get lower mpg than the aerodynamic trucks. I have a friend who owns a 379 Peterbilt and consistently gets over 6 mpg but he keeps his speed down and I believe runs his cruise much of the time.

You can get just as good fuel milage in a 379 as anything else,.. as long as you are careful. If you pour the coal to it everyday, you won't get good milage at all. If you ease into it, and just let the motor work by itself, you can get decent milage.

There's no reason for a square hood Western Star to be any worse than any other square hood. Mileage will always depend on specs and driving. Going off the ECM can fool you sometimes. What was he pulling? As far as the weight goes for years WS was a custom built truck and most guys go a little overboard for strength when you have a ton of choices and up a little heavier as a result. 2000 was around the time they started building them in Oregon and it's generally accepted that the Canadian built trucks were a little higher quality. One thing you have to watch out for is rust because they do have a steel cab but the paint seems to hold up really well. It seems like the guys that buy one stay with them after that. Thats usually a good sign.
