Trucker A buys a $50,000 truck, runs 150,000 miles, and banks $50,000. Trucker B buys a $50,000 truck, runs 50,000 miles, and banks $40,000. Who did better? Not that my newbie opinion belongs here, but Id like to take a guess. Both truckers have indentical initial investments, but trucker A is logging 300% more miles than B, for only 25% more banked money. That sounds very inefficient to me, and would have to vote that Trucker B is the one doing "better".

Except... Trucker B is only running 1000 miles per week, and has to much time on his hands so he sits at a TS waiting for the high buck load and spends all his money on video poker.

B is the one doing "better". [/quote] Based on that math everyone should be doing HHG.

In the absence of other information in the example, why wouldn't one take the time period of the task to be the same for each driver? If each took the same amount of time, then I'll admit I'm mystified why having $10,000 less to pay taxes on is "better". What am I missing?

Time has nothing do do with my question unless you consider that Trucker B gets to spend more time at home.
Trucker B has 100,000 less miles on his truck every year. This means Trucker B can buy a cheaper truck from the get go, with more miles already on it....or his new truck will last him at least 10 years. Trucker A needs a newer, more expenive truck from the onset. MILES ARE THE ENEMY OF PROFITABILITY. |
