Pretty easy to do. How many days were you out? How many miles did you drive total this trip? What were your expenses?

That's an amazing accounting system. :roll: You claim to be averaging $1.70 per mile, yet you aren't calculating it out, nor do you plan to. The IRS will love that one.

Since the Rev is so caught up on accuracy, I hope he will explain just how Steve is a "hobby" trrucker. I don't see that at all. The fact that he has a prior career is fairly typical these days and the fact that his accounting is not done to the penny....that's for him, his accountant, and the IRS. And how you figure your revenue can be done multiple ways as the good Rev has pointed out...and GAP (general accounting principles) does not condone one over the other.

I'm wondering if the main rap the Rev (rappin Rev??) has is that others may not have the opportunity (money, no family time needed at home, etc) that Stev has might want to jump in with both feet....hey, let em. It's a free country and there are other threads that they can learn about other experiences that differ from Steve's. There are other's on this forum that have done very close to the same thing. Fact is, Steve is making it and is out there more than many of you so to me....that is no hobby.

So I enjoy reading about Steve's adventures as he gains ever more experience as a carrier.

 

The "I've got money in the bank so I must be doing good" method of accounting is the main reason I call him a hobby trucker.

Finally, someone listens. This is my main problem with this whole thing: Noobies come here and see this giant thread, and see no evidence of the fact that Steve is in a unique situation, start thinking "hey, I can do that too!", and get themselves in over their heads quick.

I'm sure that you know as well as I do that most noobies are hard to sway once they get an idea in their head. This thread serves to get those "I'm gonna make a million dollars in trucking" ideas floating.

Really? There's others here who went into trucking with zero experience by purchasing a used tractor and trailer outright, got their own authority, and pulled loads off of load boards?

Delivered my potting soil this morning up in Kittery Maine and it was probably the hardest place I've had to get into so far. The nursery has to call the police to block the road off when a delivery is made. It's a real curvy residential road with big huge tree branches and low wires. I had to drive on the wrong side of the road and make my way around different obstacles. Then to top it off I have to drive across a neighbors front lawn because the driveway is too tight to make it into. The people who own the house get their whole yard landscaped for free plus the lawn fixed every time.

My truck goes in for a PM tomorrow and window tinting the next day. I'm ready to head out now but will stay home for at least the rest of this week and take care of little things.

Well, time for Chinese food then a few shots of Tequila, Death Wish and a 2 hour nap. NAP TIME IS HAPPY TIME!!!

Nice to be home eh?? We do the same thing when we are home....seems like you run 100mph everywhere. I am usually GLAD to get back on the road and take it easy!! :lol:

We are loading pumpkins again I know "cheap freight" and heading out to FL for a Sat del near Orlando. We will get unloaded and head over to Boston Lobster Fest restraunt and PIG OUT on lobster tails 8) :P :lol: I will start fasting on Thursday so I will be starving by sat night!! :wink:

The truck will be posted for Monday so we will see what the freight goddess sends us!!

We came out here for 3.00+ a mile and going back for 1.65 so not to bad...I dont think.

I'm just going to say this and I will go back to being just a reader of this thread.

The funniest part of this entire thread is that the Rev presumes to somehow know whether Steve is sincere, whether Steve is making a profit, whether Steve is getting enough money for his services, or that Steve cares what the Rev thinks.

3.30 per mile sounds great until you back out the contract unloader expense, The inordinate amount of time you spend in hotels or waiting for loads, the claims you have to pay, etc,etc. You preach about dollars per mile but at the end of the year you probably make about as much as someone running for less per mile. Its a free country and everyone doesn't want to make the sacrifices you have had to make to get 3.30 per mile.

 

And i might be wrong, but IMHO, that's what separates "hobby", from business. you don't have to love it, you just have to do it, for the money!
