It's a 4 bedroom 2 story house with a finished basement but like me, my sister has NO junk at all so I don't think the van will be anywhere near full. Yes, she has a written quote from either 5 or 6 companies who all came out within hours of her calling. She said all were VERY eager to come out ASAP.

 

They were eager because this is the sloooooowwww season :lol: I'm glad they all came out and did the written esitmate.
EDIT- Wintertime rates go down to bring in business. In the summertime or at the beginning/end of the month, the rates are higher, as demand goes up. Simple economics
It doesn't matter if its junk or top notch furniture- the top notch stuff usually weighs more, but you'd be surprised what "junk can weigh as well :lol:

If you can, Steve, PM me or post here tomorrow what they estimated the weight at. I'd have more insight then :wink:

 

There was also a bunch of Iranian movers in NYC that did the same scam with low quotes and then hold your stuff hostage. It was on 20/20 or one of those shows. Once in a while you hear the same thing in Los Angeles too.

 

There is a proposal working its way through the channels right now to try to eliminate those type of HHG carriers. My hope is that it passes, as it will likely reduce the amount of discounts that the reputable carriers have to provide to try and compete with those fly by night HHG carriers.

 

Steve, I heard that you went directly from white collar to trucking. Is that true? Did you company drive first? How's it going from a life and income perspective? Another thing to note is that those phone estimates are not binding. They also likely do not include the Origin/Destination charges, FSC, as well as any accessorial charges that are likely to incur.

They can say $3000 on the phone, and when they come out to do the actual estimate, that $3000 can very quickly become $6000 - $10,000.

 

Rev. and Bandit are both correct. I've hauled shipments where I thought that something was definitely a miss on my paperwork, only to find out that there was never a estimator come out..it was all done via the phone. Let's just say that they were more than a "little" off on the price. Also, I've hauled shipments before where the total charges was over $25,000.00. You can have a shipment on your truck that only pays $3,500.00 but you add in the other 3-4 that are on there as well, and have a total linehaul of $13,000.00. I'm getting re-qualified right now as we speak to go back out...more so out of necessity than want, but I'm going to be going back into the pack and haul division.

 

I left that Flying J in PA the other day and figured I would do an easy day since I didn't think I could make it home. I was still about 600 miles away and it was snowing.

The weather got bad pretty quick and once again many rigs off the road. This time people were not being nice the way they were before. It was pretty much go as fast as you can then get over in the slow lane when the hammer lane was covered in a snow drift. I was nervous that day as I didn't think I was in control of preventing an accident.

I tried to stop around 190 miles from home at a service center on Rt 90 but no spots. There were spots but the lot had not been plowed. This went on for another few stops then realized I had to go for it. First time I ran illegal. I drove from 4am to 8pm that day and drove home.

Yesterday I went out for breakfast then got my truck around 8am and headed over to the customer site to drop off which was maybe 1/2 an hour away. It was cold and the wind was about 35mph. Everything on the truck was frozen and I went through 5 pairs of gloves taking the tarp off and the frozen solid winches. I was wet, cold, wind burned and covered in salt. Brought my truck back to my parking place and both air lines were broken yet again in the same place.

I just left the truck and went home, took aspirin, lit the fire then passed out for a 3 hour nap. Woke up and could hardly walk, tough day even though it was a short one.

So I'm home now and time to regroup so I don't have to come home early again.

I need to put my truck in the shop and get a few things taken care of. Minor stuff except for the 5th wheel which I'm going to get rebuilt. They tightened it all the way the last time it was in but still under load there's a lot of slop in it. Starting out if I rock the truck at all you can feel it bang back and forth.

 

get a set of rubber hoses for your air lines,have them on my Pete,work great

 

Yes, I'm going to do that today but on the road my only option was those cheap (expensive) plastic hoses they sell at the truck stops.

This just doesn't seem right. Those hoses they sell at the truck stops are DOT approved but they should be banned. They are made of plastic that break under very cold conditions. I would believe it if someone told me the manufacturers were paying off DOT so they could sell these cheaply made hoses!!
