A corp. in CA will cost a $800 a year minimum fee. For some it's worth it and for some it's not.

I remember running with other drivers, talking on the radio, and stuff. It was fun pulling in the truck stop, and eating after fueling, meeting someone face to face. I ran accross him one more time in passing at the fuel pumps in Ky. He was leaving as I was finishing up fueling. He was heading south, while I was going north. Darn I miss being out on the road......

I've been incorporated sub chapter S Delaware Corp since the 70's due to me doing consulting. Not sure it really saved me anything. I would talk to an accountant instead of getting financial advise on here for sure!
I think the guy I met up with the other day just wanted to talk and hang out. He was in his late 30's maybe and has been driving since 18. We had steak and baked potatoes on the hotel grill but ended up eating the steak with our fingers. Plastic knives and forks just don't work that well. I had a nice weekend off sitting at the truck stop. Washed windows, vacuumed, dusted, blah blah blah. It was pretty boring. Well, come Monday morning the phone was ringing non stop. I got 5 loads to Montana but they were all gone before the broker could call back. Tons of other loads came in but either too cheap or didn't want to go there. I ended up getting a load to White Hall Montana for $1.70. It's a load of wire mesh used to shore up the mine walls. It weighs 47,000 and my air gauge is almost pegged. First time I've actually seen it pegged. They have there own scale and I'm at 77,100. It felt like 200 degrees out yesterday and I was sweating bullets although it was easy to strap down and a nice neat load. I have about 800 miles to go and I have to deliver tomorrow so it looks like a 600 mile day today and get up early tomorrow. The broker I'm hauling for said he will probably have a load for me going out of Montana also. I checked the load boards and there seems to be plenty of freight. Actually I'm seeing plenty of freight everywhere. I'm pretty sore today and just waiting for the Ibuprofen to kick in.

The $800 annually is not a fee, it's the minimum tax. It's levied by CA on all corps, LLC's, and LLP's. As a solo operator there's no benefit to setting up as any of those entities. You're not relieved of any liability and you're too small to realize any tax benefit. I don't know why you'd be getting any flack about that related to your IRP. Since you're in CA, just an FYI...I filed my IFTA paperwork at the first of March and the permit and decals should be arriving today. You're looking at a 4-week wait right now. About twice as long as anything else.
