I'm used to a clutch slipping,..this one isn't slipping. When I put my ear on the gear lever there is a vibration and noise. Can this thing just be in need of adjustment?

Get an adjustment and see what happens. I had the same problem a few years ago. When I got back home I ended up replacing the whole clutch and everything was fine after that.

Make sure the gear box is full also. On the clutch, get a piece of wood to hold down your clutch pedal if you don't have anyone to hold it for you. Wedge it between the seat frame at the pedal. Make sure it is depressed all the way to the floor. Also, don't snap your adjustment nut. push it in before turning. If it hasn't been done in awhile hit it with a hammer to get it to go in like you would with old style slack adjusters.

Clutch problems
Once I had a dampening spring in the clutch disc break and get caught between the flywheel and the disc, subsequently making the clutch "engaged" all the time. I did what you're doing with the starter and getting the trans in gear. GOOD LUCK!
