Anyone drive for Fedex ground? Just curious if they get a lot of miles. The fuel cap at 1.29 seems nice.

I was a driver at ground and know a few O/O's that still run there. When I was running there eariler this year I knew the Sacramento hub teams were getting between 3k-6k a week (being realistic) and local solo drivers do about 2k a week. Different hubs get different miles, so if your thinking of going to ground check with operators in your area for what they get. The fuel program is great according to every operator I have talked with. THe best thing about ground is the terminal to terminal and all drop and hook. I only had one layover ever with them. No other company I worked with that was OTR ran smoother. My buddies that have trucks signed on with ground are all very happy (other than the long wait times to get drivers approved) and wouln't run their trucks anywhere else. Best bet if your serious is to go to your local hub and talk with the other o/o's there.

We've been running with FedEx Ground since Nov 2005. The fuel program, if you get it at the hub, is great (1.249/gal). On the road, well, it's just ok (long confusing system to figure out fsc....) We consistly get 3000 miles a week -- if we want them. That is one of the pluses -- we didn't have an assigned route (not that we could get one even if we wanted one and even then, there's no guarantee that there will be freight for you to take, so the only one who benefits from the arrangement is FedEx), so we could take time off when we needed. Now you need to understand that we would run anywhere, unlike other teams who only wanted to go from their home hub and back. This makes a huge difference in your miles and down time. For example, on the occasions when we requested certain routes, we could be left waiting for 1-2 days. Right now we're stuck in Sacramento since Sunday night because they had no loads, period, for us -- anywhere. Scary since this is peak and last year we had to beg to stop and get some sleep and a shower. Unfortunately for us, (but not FedEx) they hired on some 2000 new contractors in the past few months, and are outsourcing some of our freight to other companies (who have to receive a load since FedEx pays for them whether they use them or not). Some of the drawbacks -- no medical insurance; DHL has really hurt us, cutting down on available freight. We have never been inspected by DOT on the road -- FedEx has a great reputation in that area.

i've been at FedEx for a little bit over a month. they seem like a pretty good company overall, i can't say anything too bad about them because i've been there for a such a little time. they've been pretty good about letting you come home on the weekends, they've only screwed up once (Xmas). They sent us up to Toledo, OH and when we arrived there they told us we had to go to Sacramento, CA (keep in mind that it was already Wednesday) and we knew there was a snow storm headed for the midwest so we wanted to refuse it but they said it would look really bad on us because they sent us specifically to cover the west. so we took and had to stop in Grand Island, NE because they shut down I-80 because of the storm. we sat there until early friday morning; arrived at the sacramento hub, friday night and they told us they didn't have anything for us until next day. anyways we got back to Charlotte, late Monday.
one thing you can beat is their fuel program and it all been drop and hook. |
