TUE: I started to do the equiptment check while doing that, the yard nazi was under the trailer doing something when he found a broken brake cannister. He had me pull the trailer in and they fixed it. I pulled the trailer out and it was my turn to go under and inspect. I then found a broken leaf spring that made it past the yearly inspection by the mechanics so the nazi was happy about that. Trailer went back into the shop.

WED: no problems.

THU: Yard Nazi came back to work and was all fun and games with him. We went over some stuff and he signed me off. I was assigned truck 374 and told to get ready to go.... I told them I still had to move in and get stuff from Wally World. They were cool with that. I find out a few hours later that I have a p/up in Sumterville, Idaho of lumber for friday at 2pm. I say to myself... cool I can get stuff cleaned up in the truck and run over there later tonight or in the AM. I decided to go in the AM.

FRI: I'm heading west out of Montana and pull into the Haugan Scales. I get a Level 1 inspection! NICE  . After 45 min's there i get to leave.
So... i continue to Idaho. I get there, scale and find out that they don't have all the stuff they need to load me. But they start to load me with part of it. As that is going on I luck out and the order they were waiting for showed up. So I get loaded...scale and i'm over weight!
While on the scale they have me take off some straps and remove a larger lift of lumber and put on a smaller lift. Ok... wind is blowing and i fight with the tarps for a few hours! I'm done by 6:30 and drive back to missoula. I use the cat scale and find that Im over on the drives and trailer tandems. It's sat am and Sha%$#n is there. First I have to untarp, then unstrap, the load is shifted forward, I slide the 5th wheel forward a couple notches and Then I re-strap, and re-tarp! So sat I leave and head for a re weigh. I way 34k on trailer and 33980 on drives 11700 on steers and 3/4 tank of fuel :?: :?: . Cool I start out. I got into Butte and pull into the pilot to do a load/tire check. find a slit in left rear outside trailer tire and make phone call.... told no problem keep driving on tire, and was asked how i'm doing on fuel. I'm told to get 25 gallons so I can make it to Laurel.

SUN: wake up and find I have a blown right rear inside trailer tire! NICE! So by 10:30 I'm on the road. I'm driving on the 212 and i'm watching my gauges climb as I climb hills  4th hill all guage warning buzzers go off... water temp, oil, check engine... I'm climbing and can't do anything but get to the top. I got there and no place to stop... get the 5th hill m/m 80 or 81 and stop at the top. open the hood let the truck cool for 20 mins. I then get goin and water temp guage goes off again. I kick the heater on roll down the windows and cruise for awhile till I get past Alzaeda, Mt. Your right these trucks don't like the hills! I'm now in Vivian, SD. I'm Suppose to be in Alabama and then Tennesse by thursday and I'm reallllly low on hours  . So I to will be calling in Monday morning....All night I was waiting or a deer to run out in front of the truck... man what else is going to happen???? :?:

Holly crap dude!! PACE yourself....no need to knock everything out at one time, save some problems for when you have nothing to do   Guess the old saying of "when it rains it pours" has rung true with you.......anyways, CONGRATS on getting your truck AND handling all the issues!!!! Be safe out there.

oh yeah, btw....the high water temp has happened to me twice as well, fortunely both times I was just about to the top of the hill and as I let off the throttle and prepared to pull over, the warning went away so i kept on trucking down the other side.

boy am i glad now that i turned down that smelterville load

helpful hint with a green truck and heat....turn the fan on manual at the bottom before you even start up.....it helps....but remember to turn it back off after you crest the hill

thier trucks hate hills becuase of how they are spec'd....as flat land trucks....you need more gears....sorry fella's

So Davis Transport is pulling heavy loads out of West has spec'd their trucks for flat lands! What is up with that? BTW, I have been talking to both DD and GFI, and I have a prehire letter from Davis to start in October. I like the company, I knew about them when I drove back in the 90's, seems to a small friendly outfit. But, this power/cooling issue concerns me.

What I understand is Davis's KW T800, both 05's and 07's, have 3406E C13 engines rated at 430hp and 10 speed trans. GFI now and DD's trainer have 07's, but don't experience this cooling issue. DD and dewercs2 are in 05's which seems to have a pulling/cooling problem. Are these trucks spec'd differently between the years?

My experience driving was a Detroit Diesel 325/350 COE in the 90's. I twice had problems. Once, the fan clutch was not engaging at the correct temperature. I disabled(there was no manual override) the clutch so that it was always on and had it repaired when I passed thru a terminal. The other time I had a truck that run hot on ALL grades whether heavy or light. I drove it for 20,000 miles thru 2 PM's trying to get company maintenance to understand that this was a REAL problem. They finally found that the radiator baffles were corroded and coolant was moving thru it too quickly to properly remove the energy. They actually rebuild the radiator  and the problem was solved.

My company truck was severly underpowered. I remember pulling US212 between Broadus and Lame Deer where I had to drop into Low Range on a couple hills. But, I guess my truck's cooling system was rated better than the engine power because I didn't overheat. Were these T800's not giving the cooling capacity to match the 430hp motor? Only time I had a truck shutdown on me to protect from overheating was on I17N between Phoenix and Flag Staff. That was the truck with the radiator problem and it was HOT outside!!

Well soon I will get to fine out in person about the Davis equipment. I hope there is a solution.

Check the sticker on the drivers door for the manufactured date. My truck was made in 2/04 not 05

Tonight I have made it to St Joseph, Missouri without any problems!
Except I'm almost out of hours, I've used 55 3/4 hrs this week. I didn't get to reset while I was in Missoula. 85 and muggy here @9:30pm. Im going to idle tonight. 8)

dd,
Cancel the thought about PM. I'm not allowed yet... need to have 50 posts per CAD rules.
Before I left on sat a driver turned in his truck since he could not get home. He came out of training when I was there the first week...

All I want to do is get to Cali for maybe 4-5 days of home time.

ok i may have misled you...they are not flatlander trucks.....just spec'd for best fuel economy thru a wide range of operating area's ( mainly mid-west and east of the ole missippi)....that said they are not set up to pull mountians with any kind of speed....sorry no 10 speed ever is

lumber loads....no matter where you are are always heavy...come to think about it so are steel loads but i digress....everyone runs heavy out west becuase you have to....alot of lumber loads pay by the 100 lb...so the more you put on the better you get paid, and at 48,000 yer still not making alot of money, but it does pay the bill's

cat c13 is a 13 liter motor....a 3406e ( what i have) is a much larger, heavier motor ( its the old version of a c15)
thats one of the problems in my opionon, and its just that...an opionon
that little mouse motor spends way to much time wrapped out to maintian decent fuel economy....watch your little cat id bounce around from 2 mpg to 6 mpg and then check the average...around 5.5 mpg....at least thats what my old green truck used to get
as far as the cooling problem....the radiator is prolly to small, that combined with the fact you cant maintian a decent enuff speed to push air thru it, and you fan cycling off an on.....well then you have an issue

now all this being said....yes i do like the company and yes i work for them...my truck # is 77T...its the only red kw that i know of here
i even liked the green one i drove for awhile...but i think it needed more gears, i have nothing against a 10 speed except your either lugging the engine or runnin it wrapped out...with a 13 you can keep it in the low powerband to maintian power and fuel economy

now that i have thourghly hijacked DD thread i will return it to him, with my apoligies

Thanks for setting me straight on 3406E, C13, and C15.

I have read your journal and you are getting excellent mileage with your truck. So your bigger engine and splitter is allowing you to run easier than Davis's company equipment?

I am sure there are other factors for cooling system capacity, but doesn't the T800 have greater frontal grill area than your T600? Shouldn't it be able to pull more air thru the radiator?

Yes, we have hijacked DD thread but we are discussing his cooling issue.

You do have an awesome red truck in a green fleet!

easy answer....yes having the larger motor and more gears gets me better mileage than a company truck...even though the combo wieghts alot more than thier setup

t800 does have a larger grill area than a t6, but i have a larger radiator thanks to the motor....it should yes...but doin 20 mph up a steep hill with the fan cycling allows it to build more heat, and even i turn my fan on when i know theres gonna be a long pull...a habit i got in driving a green truck, thanks to the same issue

thanks for the compliment on ole red...it has 1,142,093 miles as of right now, but is still runnin hard down the road and gettin good mileage to boot

now i return this thread back to the chief......maybe....lol
