I updated the thread yesterday as I promised and for some reason it didn't take..........so here's the condensed version:

After spending a week at home with the family, I picked up a load of pipe out of Houston, TX going to Moab, UT.

I get to the job site and had to stradle a 3' wide, 3' deep ditch as they unloaded 9 pieces of pipe and then move forward and repeat the process. This does sound too bad except the terain was sand and the ditch did not go in a straight line. All I could imagine was one of the axles sliding into it and I would have been screwed. But it all went well and off I went to Green River, UT to wait for another load.

I expected to sit in Green River for a day or so as Utah is not the best of places to get decent paying freight. Well just 4 hours later I was offered an "OK" rate on a load that was going from SLC to Walla Walla, Wa so I took it.

This is a very light load weighing less than 8k but fills my entire deck. I fully expect to get some good fuel mileage. But as my luck would have it, there is a STRONG head wind and my fuel mileage sucks!!! Some drivers were saying that the wind was so strong yesterday that they shut I-84 down around 6pm on the Idaho side near the state line and didn't reopen it until 7am today.

I got fed up fighting the wind so I shut down in Eden, ID for the day. Hopefully the wind will dissipate. I can not deliver this load until 8am on Thursday so I have plenty of time.

Oh, and since my son will be headingoff to college soon, we decided to have hime come out with me for a couple of weeks for some father and son bonding. Sure is nice to have some company for a change.

I think it is very cool that your son is hanging out with you! How long will he be out with you?

Take Care,

Likewise....it's always good chatting with him even though it's not as often these days. Sure am glad he is doing well over there.

It's great having my son out here. It's nice to share my experiences with him as well as just having some company. When I was in the Navy, he got to go on a couple of "Dependent's Day" cruises as well as what they call a "Tiger" cruise when I was stationed in Japan. That one they (the command) flew him with others to Hong Kong to meet the ship and then they rode onboard for a week as we headed back to base in Yokosuka, Japan. He got to see what the Navy life was like and now he is seeing what my new career is like.

Anyways, tell Mr. GFI I said hello..........take care.

I made my drop in Walla Walla and I as much as would like to say it went without a hitch it wasn't too smooth.

I was instructed to call the consignee when I arrived in town and he would then come out and meet me where I would follow him to the job site. I was carrying insulation board that weighed a whopping 7,800lbs and it was going to a hospital where a contractor was repairing roof damage from none other than a wind storm that rolled through there about a wek eariler.

So I called the guy and he came and met me. we go down the road a ways (making some very tight turns btw) when he stops. He comes up to the truck and suggests that I jump in the van and drive the route with him as he believes it will be a challenge for a large truck. Seems like every time I get a load that goes to a job site, they all say the same thing and unfortunately it always turns out to be true.

As we are driving, it is immediately apparent that this will be a little bit of a challenge. There are a couple of spots along the route that I will need him and his crew to hold traffic up so I can manuver around.

We get to the hospital and I was thinking it was a large one (guess I was thinking like a military hospital) but it was small, and the entrance as well as the layout was definately not designed with a semi in mind. We get to his site and he asks me if I could just back it in over there all will be good. I could not help but laugh because there was no way you could manuver a big truck where he wanted me to go. Hell, one would be pressed to manuver a small pick-up truck with a small trailer there. I of course explained to him why I would not be able to to it. He then drives around the building to a helo pad and asks if I would be able to do it there. I told him it was real tight getting to the pad but yeah I think I can make it work.

So back to the truck we go. As we headed back, I once again explaimed to him that althouh my trailer is only 48', that with the spread axle she doesn't like to track too well and that with a loaded flatbed I can not turn as sharp as say a van could. While I am explaining this to him I am pointing out the spots along the route where I belive it will be tight and where I will need the assistance holding up traffic. he fully understands and continually apologizes for the trouble. I thought that was rather nice of him but explained there was no need to apologize. We'll "get-ur-don" one way or another.

I eventually made it back on the helo pad (did take out a small bush when the trailer hopped the curb at the hospital) and got unloaded. Now we had to go back out and it went a little smoother with the trailer empty.

After unloading I bounced over to Pasco, WA and shut down. Before the day was over I had another load to assigned from Umatilla, OR going to Eden, WY with that is light, no tarp and has a decent rate. I am scheduled to unload first thing Monday morning and am currently sitting about 30 miles or so from my drop at "Cruel Jack's truck Stop" of I-80.

Since I left the house, I have been luck thus far with light, no tarp loads, as well as not having to wait very long for a re-load. I am suspecting that my luck is going to run out soon.
