Do lease agreements have minimum mileage requirements? In other words, is it possible to lease on to a company like Landstar, for example, but not run all the time -- work 4 day weeks or run for a week and not the next, etc.? Thanks for your help.

 

Most percentage company's let you work as you want, you are a independent contractor, not a employee. Right now you are lucky if you can work more than 2 or 3 days a week.

 

this is how schneider puts it.............

if your on the mileage program, if your avail for dispatch %85 then they will pay your plates....

i run percentage and have been off for the past 2 weeks...nuthin said. but i pay for my own plates anyway

 

Yes as far as Landstar goes. In fact they will let you take as much time off as you want. When your weekly deductions reach 2k then they will look at terminating your lease agreement.

 

I had heard at least one dispatch every 90 days at Landstar, don't know for sure though.

 

Most carriers who pay percentage are more liberal in how they will allow you to run than those who pay mileage. I have leased to 2 carriers and both pay percentage. There was never a lot of pressure for me to run, but I was always a strong runner anyway. If a load didn't pay enough then I didn't move my truck. You are an independent contractor with these carriers. If they started requiring you to run a minimum number of miles or generate a minimum amount of revenue then your status could change to that of an employee. They don't want that since they would be required to pay benefits.

 

They told us that you can run as much or as little as you want. There is no minimum amount of miles or revenue you must generate nor is there a maximum amount of time you can take off. The catch to all this is that they will continue to deduct whatever weekly cost (i.e. insurance, transflo, prepass, etc). If you reach a negative account of 2k then they will contact you and discuss your future with them.

 

Devildice, are things still going relatively well with Landstar? I've been following your thread and Broncrider's thread for quite a while.

Do you if Landstar will allow a 1990 model truck on a lease? I have another question about brokers in Texas, but I don't want to get too far off the subject, so I'll start another thread for that one. Thanks.

 

Things are going fairly well considering the economy and time of year. As far as equipment goes, I do not believe they have a age restriction (don't quote me on that) as long as it can pass a DOT inspection.

 

As far as I know Landstar still doesn't have an age restriction on trucks. It must look half way decent and pass a DOT inspection.
