There is a difference between doing LTL and working for an LTL carrier. There are some typically truckload carriers who do some LTL. I have done quite a bit of LTL over the years. Rates usually tend to be higher and you will likely run fewer miles for the week due to the extra stops. Sometimes you are given priority with an LTL and other times you wait your turn. If you work for a LTL carrier then you may only run local or regional. Some of them have short-haul or local drivers who run a route and pickup LTL's all during the day. These may go back to a central distribution point where the pieces are sorted and may be put on a truckload carrier for delivery. These can be their own trucks or those that are used from another carrier. It is basically 2 separate segments of the market. When I do LTL I may only have 2-6 drops. A regular LTL carrier could have double or more since they may pickup smaller packages or pallets. Both are LTL but operate somewhat differently.

I never did like the multi-stop LTL stuff. All them picks and drops and appointment times and people hollarin where's my freight? Well buddy if this a-hole at stop #3 wasnt holdin me up you'd have your precisous skids and I'd be on my way. But nooooooo. I tell you alot of these brokers who in my opinion are nothing but third rate thieves they don't know nothing about heavy multi stop BS. And you pretty much have to cook the book when you run LTL and get held up.
Then you get these loads were it's 4 skids and you show up and the guy don't got no towmoter, he's got no dock, he's got no pallet jack and you're parked in the street with your flashers on wonderin just what the hell you're gonna do. "Oh well, take it over to Yellow Freight and have them deliver it." OK how much am I gonna get paid? "Nothing cause if we ain't getting paid then you ain't either". WELL BUDDY THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM NOT MINE! You see what I'm gettin at? Sometimes that stuff pays good but aint worth the hassles you gotta go throough getting it off your wagon. Other times you can get in and out and keep rollin but I tell ya I don't like that LTL stuff never did. |
