Default Monthly cost of running an OTR truck?

Man, look at me: another newbie with questions! Oh goodie..

What exactly falls into the category of a "Solid Used Truck" that people are recommending to purchase? Is that like a 100k truck? 300?

Also, what can one expect to pay to purchase a "Solid Used Truck" and then monthly costs to run it?

Thanks for the info! I've only ever seen trucking from the company driver aspect.

You may want to do a search. We have discussed this before. It will vary according to where you run, cost of equipment, experience, etc., The less experience, the more you will pay for insurance. Most insurance companies won't insure a driver with less than 2 years experience, unless they can go through a carrier with whom they lease. You can also go to the OODA website. There is a formula for running a truck. It covers most things, and can give you an idea of what it actually costs to run a truck. There are variables such as rate at which you run, cost of truck, and fuel costs (which can vary according to where you run).

Being a company driver helps you a little. Get a note book and start recording your fuel purchases. Write down how much and cost per gallon. Do this for a year or at the least several months. Fuel will be one of your largest costs. Start writing down everything the truck seems to need, PM's, fuel, little things here and there. Then figure your cost of the truck.

While people like to put that into a CPM - that truck payment is the same regardless if I drive 10k miles or 3 -- I need to have that money in the bank on the 1st of every month. So I would look at what I am being paid per mile and divide that into my truck payment and insurance. That's the amount of miles you MUST run every month to atleast make the payment. (Not including covering the cost of fuel).

Just keep a log of what you are spending in the truck - that truck don't know if you are o/o or company so it's gonna be the same.

Other's here can help more I bet but this is just my .02

YMMV
