Default New detroit engine, the DD15, with turbocompounding

At the rated engine speed of the DD15, the turbine reaches a rotation speed of more than 40,000 rpm. Power is transferred to the gear drive, and therefore to the crankshaft, via a shaft and a hydrodynamic coupling. This arrangement produces a uniform and smooth crankshaft rotation despite the higher torque, according to the company; additionally, fuel consumption is reduced by up to 5 percent compared with a similarly spec'd Series 60.

page 6, the sort of "half turbo" looking thing is the turbo compound unit. It directly attaches to the rear gear train.

Default Thanks for the post

I was wondering when engine manufacturer's would get around to capturing that last bit of power from the power plant.
The B-50C/D model bombers had compound engines fifty years ago.

When I took the engine cover off the inside of my truck,..there was a prototype of this system. 3 rat skeletons on the back of my engine,....guess it didn't work out too well for them

I love how whenever a company is touting fuel savings they use the phrase "up to". Somehow, I doubt that the average user ever gets his savings "up to" that level.

A Detroit that'll pull at 1100 RPM? Boggles the mind.
