Pre-purchase Protocol??-(Used Tractor Inspection)
Greetings,
Your opinions wanted. I intend to buy my first tractor in the near future. (yes, for cash GMAN ) I plan to have the tractor(s) inspected at a diesel truck shop that I know and trust, including dyno, oil analysis, FMCSA inspection, etc. Is it appropriate to ask the seller to allow me to take the truck (or have them take it) to my shop for a thorough check-up prior to purchase? What if the tractor is in another state, say within 300 miles, still OK if I pay the fuel, assuming the truck is not in daily use? Would that be asking too much? Thanks!

I am glad you plan on paying cash, Red Clay Rambler. I doubt whether a seller is going to want you to take the truck 300 miles to have it checked without some assurance that he has a sale. You might consider either taking your mechanic with you or find a local shop that you feel comfortable. Most dealers will give a truck a throrough check for a fee. If the guy is really motivated, he might be willing to bring the truck to you if you gave him a deposit with the stipulation of getting the money back should the ruck not be up to par. I would talk to him and see if he will just bring the truck to you. It is worth a shot.

Thanks, G,
I hope to find something near me, but there are so many Class 8's out there and the internet allows you to search much farther, obviously. BTW, have you done alot of your maintenance/repairs yourself or used shops in your area? |
