Figured since I've been driving for 30 years, and now I do it professionally, I ought to find out for sure.

I always thought when you are in a turning lane and there is an extra set of lights exclusively for the turning lane, the right on red rule does not apply. Is that right? I see people turning right on red in those situations all the time. They even honk and get huffy if you are in front of them and you don't do it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if those lights are there specifically for the turning lane, then you only proceed if you have green. Is that right?

 

Only if there is a "black on white" sign stating;-Right, or left turn, on a green arrow only. Or something like that, which will prevent you, from doing so legally... That's my perception....

 

If you wanted to turn right and there were the three colored arrows for the right turn lane wouldn't the red arrow be the same as a sign? Even if there isnt a black and white sign saying "No turn on red".

 

No. What the red arrow for a right turn indicates is that you must come to a complete stop before turning right. If you had the green then you could go without stopping first.

 

You are correct, if there is a red turn light it is a stop sign essentially.

I think the exception is where the right turn is more like an exit with a yield sign. Then you do not have to stop.

How about this, TWO turning lanes side by side. Can you turn right on red from the inside lane?

I'm pretty sure you can proceed only after stopping, but if a sign prohibits it then you cannot.

Only the lane closest to the curb can turn right on red. In Montreal you cannot turn right on red no matter what. Absolutely not allowed.

 

I have always assumed that you can turn on red, unless posted.
