That would make sense since these guys haul speed boats and such, they're not very heavy, about 1000lbs each and only 4-5 to a load.

We put singles on 2 of our dump boxes and I hated unloaded them!!! a 40ft MAC frameless with 29T of sand unloading on a soft bottom was no fun, then add the narrower singles (about 6" on each side) made it worse.....no thanks

Yeah, out of the sandbox for you jagerbomber.............:-) I also like reading the "adventures" apparently tracer is overqualified for trucking, based on his bio, wonder why he's is even messing aound with it? As far as the ignore list, it's HIS loss, not any body elses, theres a few hundred years experience to pick thru on this board, use it or ignore it, doesnt matter to me.

I've been running the idea of super singles myself. I could sure use 600lbs less weight as I'm usually 80K and only 1/2 fuel. Downside is I wouldn't lose 600lbs, I pull company trailers so would only go ss on the tractor. I currently have alum wheels that don't need replacing, so expense of ss would be much greater than 8 reg tires. And for not just me but you too, a big loss is Canada only allows 34000 on tandems with ss tires, much less than dual tires. I do sometimes pull 87000 gross loads within Canada. And I've heard other talk about how the new wheels get mounted. If ordering a brand new truck with super singles, cost is no different than duals, but switching an old truck from duals to SS requires some spacers or something that are hard on axle seals. Kind of scares me from making the switch.

All I can say is life is good sitting here at my home, amidst my belongings, looking at my car and pickup, trying to work up the motivation to finish brake job on tractor and then start trailer brake job. Plenty of beer in fridge. Sun is shining and birds are singing.

There will always be pro's and con's to everything and everone's opinion will vary a bit. When I was driving for CFI we had super singles on our tractors - I thought they looked sharp .... and the big bosses couldn't say enough good about them ... I'm sure that was on the Cost side. But the drivers all said one thing ....." be extra careful on the ice and wet road with the super singles" .... So go with your gut feeling and be careful.

Well, I ended up buying 8 regular tires and 4 new Accuride steel rims, believe it or not. I think supersingles would make sense for a VAN trailer, but with a flat/step I'm always going to some crazy construction sites or driving on gravel or dirt roads: $800 super-singles are just too expensive from the standpoint of view of flats and repairs.
I chose Yokohama RY-023 14 ply 295 LP tire ... and now my truck sits even lower than before This tire spins 520 revs/mile so my RPMs at 60 MPH would go up to the almost perfect 1,298 RPM. This particular tire shop didn't have used aluminum rims so I just paid $99 each for brand new Accuride rims and they put them on the outside. The truck now looks much better.
