Steer Tire Choices/Recommendations
Hi,
I need to replace the steer tires on the truck I just purchased. I'm a big Michelin fan, just don't know if I can stomach spending the extra $ Here is what I have priced out, this is with FET, not installed. Michelin XZA3 - $436/ea Goodyear G395 - $335/ea Toyo M147 - $257/ea Any insight would be helpful. I'm open to other suggestions as well. Thanks!! -scott

If you like Michelin you may want to check out Double Coin. They were designed to look like Michelin. I have had good service out of the Double Coin tires that I have purchased and paid half the money as for a Michelin. I believe the last Double Coin 24.5 tires I purchased I paid about $253.
Yokohama also makes a good tire, but may cost a little more than the Double Coin.

Firestones
Hi, I live in NYC (Pot-hole heaven) this well cause your tires to go out of round and vibrate. My tires have held up very well. I advise don't go cheap on steers. When you go to a TA truck stop ask to lift a Firestone tire, then lift a Kelly tire, there is at least a 18lb difference in weight. Large fleets have to consider steer tire cost, I think your life is worth the extra $200 bucks!

I've yet to get more 100k from a set of Toyo's. They seem to go out-of-round leaving a bald spot on one edge or the other. i've had good luck with the Firestones purchased from a local dealer who'd overstocked and had to clear 'em out!

When I was replacing all tires on my truck in January 2008, I wanted to put Yokohama on all 10 wheels. Our tire guy at MacKinnon recommended I use Michelin for the steers. I now have Yokohama 295s on the drives and Michelin 275s on the steers. My steering has considerably improved thanks to Michelin, and Yokohama TY-517 tires seem to age/wear well. A highly recommended combo...
