Tanker Product Pump Question

Default Tanker Product Pump Question

I know there are a few Chenical Tanker O/O's on this board, so I thought you might be ablse to help me with a problem.

I use my Roper PTO driven product pump a lot. I use it at least once a week and often three times per week. A slow leak or drip has developed where the shaft from the PTO enters the pump. When I firt noticed it, it was one drip every minute or so, now it is a few drips per second.

This was a used pump when I bought it and as I said I have used it alot. Another driver said it would need to be "repacked" whatever that means. Can this be fixed or do I need a new pump? Is a repair going to be costly? Where would I go for this repair? Thanks for any ideas.

you should be able to take it in and have it fixed in one to two day's. repack should run less then 200.00

The packing is only a few dollars, I would say take it into Superiors shop and let them do it, if you or any one else isn't familair with how to do it they can do more harm than good.

Should be a simple fix, I'd say 100 bucks. and 2 or 3 hours.

you can tighten the packings several times before replacing them, the packing is some fiber that goes around the shaft to seal it. any mechanic can show you how to tighten it, if it still leaks then they will need to be replaced , if its just a small drip and you have never tightened them, that's probably all it needs, by the way, it wont hurt the pump to use it, but some customers may not like it.

this may not be your pump, but they are all basically the same, try tightening the packings and see what happens.

I wish I could. Superior will not work on an O/O truck at all. Not even if I pay.

Superior will not work on an O/O truck at all.


Sometimes the mechanics can be persuaded especialy after hour$ if ya know what I mean.

And YOU can tighten the packing yourself like Fredog mentioned, just go easy, maybe 1 turn on each nut, and NOT when the pump is on.

I've seen O/O's trucks being worked on when I pass through our Pasadena yard???

I am at Pasadena TX right now! I will ask them if they will show me how to tighten it for myself. I am new (February) so maybe I didn't understand correctly, but I could have sworn they told me in Atlanta no work could be done on my truck by Superior.

Fredog, thanks for the info. I am going to try and get the model number off my pump and download the right manual. Your two posts are a great help. I guess I just need to figure out or have someone show me, which are the packing tightening nuts.
