You will need a truck number to even get your cab card. Your log book has a place for the truck and trailer numbers. Many shippers also like to see a truck number to keep track of carriers. You will also need a truck number to keep track of fuel purchases. Just make up your own number. It can be anything you wish. I don't recall seeing any truck that uses the tag number, although technically you probably could use the same number. If you don't have a number you will stand out when you pass through the scale since every other truck will have a number. I seem to remember something in the regs about it, but have not found anything.

I have my last 8 of VIN on my passenger door due to Colorado requirements but I keep my hood clean of any company truck number. Not required on hood. I bought a nice polished SS license plate blank and put my company truck number on it and put it on my bumper opposite the apportioned plate.
The security guards always miss it!
