I'm barely surviving out here. It's hard times. last run on 3600 miles paid $3.50+

I don't see how you can afford to run on $3.50 for 3600 miles, Bandits Cousin. A gallon of diesel costs more than that. You must have moved up to "hobby" trucker. You know, it would cost less to run if you get rid of the trailer. Since you are now a hobby trucker you no longer need to carry a trailer around. Perhaps you could haul some freight for me and I will pay you $4.00 for 3,600 miles. At least you will have enough for a full gallon of diesel.

And to think, he has to take his labor expenses out of that $3.50. I'd hate to be on his crew.

Yea, but when you are a hobby trucker it isn't about the money. You don't worry about labor or making money.

I agree with allan5oh 100%. Those incorporated truckers-turned-capitalists make it too complicated.

Here's one simple definition of PROFIT taken from the Dictionary on my Mac laptop.

PROFIT
noun
"a financial gain, esp. the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something."

So, for a self-employed trucker, if you EARNED $10,000 a month OPERATING your truck, and your expenses were $6,000, then $4,000 is your PROFIT.

If you bought a rare key chain for $1 in China (while on tour), and sold it on eBay for $300, and eBay charged you $5 for posting, then your profit is 300-5-1=$294 (shipping paid by the buyer).

Or would you pay yourself a "wage" for selling the keychain on eBay?

If I were running a business selling things on eBay (which I have, as an S-Corp), then yes.

I think it's a good idea to separate wages from profit even if you are a single truck operation. Yeah it's "funny money" in that it would all go into your bank account but it tells you if your BUSINESS is making money or not.
I'd want to know that so that if I got sick for a few months and had to hire a driver for the truck I know that I would not be losing money.

Excellent point, most would not be able to survive if they had to pay a driver with a one truck operation.

Lol. Ummm, ok  I haven't done HHG in well over a month. And that was 1 trip. Good assumption though! Epic fail on your information

Gman....I make so much money I ran across the US for $3.50. I was making GREAT money until mile #2 came, and my rate/mi started dropping drastically

You should have stopped at the end of mile 1. That just goes to show you that it is about money, not miles.
