On a serious note. I met a guy last week while I was getting my 120 day inspection at PETRO.When he realised I was with Landstar he came up to me to tell me his story.Landstar cancelled his lease after a shipper damaged his truck.I guess the forklift guy missed the bed and dropped the metal pipe on the side of his truck. This damged part of the sleeper, rack and battery box.He said he went crazy at that moment and due to this, the shipper called the cops.He said he threatened the forklift guy and he also m mentioned cust. serv. calling him and afterwards it was cheerrios for him after 3 yrs with Landstar. He just signed on with Jones Motor out in PA.He was also surprised Landstar never backed him up for that incident. He has hired a lawyer to get the shipper to fix his truck. I went to CAB classes 2 weeks ago and the instructor discussed all these pay outs for these "no fault accidents" BCOs had with 4 wheelers even when these were non preventables.he also mentioned that Landstar has an image eto protect that is why they spend all these millions in settlements whatever the outcome. Way too much beauracracy for me.They have already started sending me log violations and I have been going through my logs to see my mistskes. The CAB class also mentioned that Landstar gives only 18 violations in a 6 month period and anything more "you are gone".Not to mention the 2 DOT shut downs. As the days go by, I read comments from veterans like Gman on how to get their own authority.I am always thinking and how o to get to "greener pastures".Many told me not to buy an old truck, I defied that and they also told me about the hurdles I would go through in being an O/O.I defied all this and even people on this same board laughed on how I bought a POS equipment and how green I was.I defied all this and the only thing in between me and being totally independent is the insurance which is about $450/month and about $1700 down payment and I am glad I have my own base plat an MC #.I quit containers and signed on with Landstar but I know there are greener pastures out there. Yeah, you didn't get your CDL with Landstar. You are here now, who knows about tomorrow? Try to treat the company with respect. If you move on try to move up, too. Sounds like you've already overcome a lot. I think I'm starting to see some of the advantages from being in the system awhile. The level playing field load matching and the load board provide are something of an illusion. Out of Denver, they're just not putting the loads on the board. They get loads, but they don't post them. There's a load that goes from PA to OH regularly. When I'm over that way I call about it. Only pulled it two or three times but the agent likes the fact that I've done it and didn't screw it up and she doesn't have to explain much. She wants to give it to me when it's available, she doesn't want to have to post it. This has got to be going on all the time with the BCOs and the agents in the system awhile. I pay attention to other opportunities. Myself, I'm not ready to buy a trailer and take on the extra paperwork of going independent just yet. Perhaps next year. I'm reading these chemical tanker blogs. The guys I'm hearing from are happy, that right there says something. Right now I'm looking at running out the year with Landstar. You know, if it keeps going where agents remember me and I see more of what they have and now I'm the guy who knows who has what and don't have to rely on the load matching so much, I may do well just to stick around and take advantage of it. I hate hearing about being dispatched to you don't know where. Maybe it's psychological but I like being in control of the decision about where I'm going. I lllooovvveee this thing about Landstar where you can go to the house and take two months of if you can afford to and then you get a call asking, 'Hi, so, do you still work here?' Different possibilites. Thank God for opportunities and choices.

You tell the computer how far you will deadhead, how much you must make, where you want to go within a radius of 25-500 miles, or you can get calls, say, within a 100 mile radius going anywhere grossing at least 1.70 a mile (that's not your cut) but also grossing at least $680, or whatever. The alternative is just to be looking at the loadboard. You can waste hours doing that, I prefer to punch it into the computer and let the calls come to me. It has glitches, and a lot of people don't know how to do it right, but it does work pretty well if you know what you are doing.

I remember when I got into this system thinking that the amount of freedom you have is so tremendous it would be worth it even if it paid less than the sorta kinda forced dispatch system I had been in. It's a mistake to ever take that freedom for granted. I picked up some financial obligations over the past year and now my top priority is to be out and running and blasting away at those debts. As you've been able to read, without deadhead pay, we struggle a little to get the rates we need.

Besides the laptop you can also get an electronic gadget that does the same thing and this is rented/bought through landstar.I am not sure what they call that device. They even have Qualcomm that you can have installed on your truck. They also have some guys running without a laptop and I wonder how they do it.
I met a specialised hauler who had no laptop in his truck and his wife at home did all the dispatching. In being soo new, one thing I havn't figured out is to verbally "suspend" an alert without having to log onto your laptop to suspend it.I have never also tried using the IVR for the "check calls" but I rather do it online. yeah CAM, lives on this site with 497 posts.Keep that laptop tucked away and concerntrate on the road boy!
