Where are you at now? In Brooks? Maybe hit them up for a different truck!

Sorry to hear about the flat messing you up. This will be like my husbands first real week. The accident messed him up last week pretty good. And then coming home to get the truck outfitted.

My husband picked up a load this morning in Portland and took it to Brooks Oregon. The load he picked up was going down to Lathrop, CA. But he had to stop in at the Brooks Terminal and speak to the safety department so someone else got that load.

My husband said the safety department guy was really nice as far as his accident. He got his written notice of being on probation and a write up for the accident. He had to retake the driving test as is required when this happens.

After he was done in Brooks they gave him a load up to Sumner WA near Tacoma. Today he will only have a total of 247 miles but allot of that had to do with the accident thing. I am glad that is behind him.

And hopefully next week we will have more of an idea how many weekly miles he will get.

One thing that I think is important is to not look at weekly miles. Wait for a month and average it out per week and per day. Then do it again after two months. DH is still getting used to the road. Try to think long term.

Definitely feel lucky he wasn't fired. :P

I realize that at this point weekly miles are not going to be what they will be.

But I know how important it is for newbies who are looking for a company or people looking to get involved in trucking. There were threads where people were saying you could make more flipping burgers at two burger jobs.

Some people are just so negative about the aspects of trucking and I would imagine they are that way about everything in their life.

I want to give an idea to newbies and lurkers of all the questions and concerns we had while we were looking into the company.

And yes we are blessed that he stills has a job! It was nerve racking for those first few days!

And my husband called tonight to find his truckstop in Washington! I looked it up on the web for him. He is definitely going to invest in a book.

I never really subscribed to the flipping burgers will make you more than driving line of thinking. I for one would never count off duty time as working. Of course you're not at home, but if you're reading a novel in bed, you sure as hell aren't working. Lets look at some numbers:

I averaged about 60-65 hours per week on my log at May. Without shaving some time here and there it was likely closer to 67-72. I won't deny that shaving an hour a day here and there was not part of the routine. But for the most part, I ran legal and under 70 hours every 7 days. I never drove tired. I never drove when I felt unsafe. I was never forced to run when I didn't want to.
On the high end of hours (most hours logged), I made about $15 per hour.
That's not possible in fast food. It just isn't.

Something to consider.

My husband received his next load only 245 miles due tomorrow with two stops! I understand the first two loads this week with under 250 but I hope that this is not going to be the normal runs for my husband as this will not be good for us financially.

He said he saw his trainer at the Brooks terminal when he was there and that his trainer said he was not getting any miles to speak of since my husband was with him.

I only pray his next run will have more miles but so far this week from Monday and including this load he has only done 1137 miles. Tuesday was 400 miles the best he has gotten so far.

I will keep this updated and prayerfully things will pick up! Maybe it is just a slow week for May Trucking!

Praise the Lord!!
My husband after dropping off the second load in Kennewick, Wa tomorrow will go and pick up a load in Lewiston Idaho and will be headed for Las Vegas, NV. This load is due in Las Vegas early Sunday. This will add allot more miles on this week.

I know Monday he was at home most of the day so 250 miles was not bad. Yesterday he had to speak with the safety director and take the driving test again after that he got the 250 miles both are understandable.

Next week should be more of idea of what normal miles will be weekly. I know that things have gotten a little messed up mileage wise with his accident.

My husband is on his way to Las Vegas. First big run and we are happy about it. So far everything that has been shown to us by May Trucking is what they say is what you get. My husband is very pleased to be working with them and has no complaints.

I have sent a link for this thread to May and gave an open invitation for any recruiters that may want to come on this thread. I do not know whether or not it will get to the right place or if anyone will be interested but with the other companies having recruiters on CAD to answer questions I thought I would give them an invitation!

Thanks for keeping us updated. Right now May is number one on my list after I go through school in December. Can you tell me why you chose the Dry Van division over May's Refer division since the refer terminal is closer to Northern Idaho?

Your welcome for the updates!

We chose the Dry Van division so he could stay in the 11 Western. Closer to home so to speak.

The Brooks, Oregon Terminal is about the same distance as the Payette, Idaho terminal. We live in Northern Idaho.

Since he has been out on his own for a whole week and a half he has been in both terminals.

With May Trucking my husband has said that everyone there is nice. Some of the horror stories I have read about some of the other companies have not occurred there. And having a preventable accident his first trip out they were very cool about it.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
