Their way of training back then was to get two student fresh out of CDL school and put them in a truck together for 3 weeks and run the truck as a team. That was it! No trainer at all! My partner was trying to pull into a spot at a truck stop in WA and scraped the side of their trailer on our very first run. (We were based out of the Layton, Utah yard, but were flown to Brooks,Oregon to get a truck). We had to figure everything out on our own! The only real training we got was from other very kind-hearted drivers who took the time out of their busy schedules to talk to us. 3 weeks later we were given our own trucks, no questions asked.

but I didn't know what to look for because I was never trained properly. 6 months later with no further accidents I was still uncomfortable with being in the truck so I went to work at a refinery for 4 years until I felt I was ready to come back

Now I have 2 and a half years under my belt with no accidents( at fault, I had a lady hydro-plane into me in LA. Sorry for the book, But I had really enjoyed this thread and genuinely felt sorry when I heard that he was terminated. But things will get better and I will say a prayer for both of you.

Chris
Thank you Chris for sharing your story with us regarding your tenure at May Trucking Company!

The training has improved since you have been there but it seems that from your story and others I have read lately on this forum that getting off at the wrong off-ramp or overshooting your exit and ending up in trouble seems to be somewhat common. I do not understand why this would not be covered in any training. I think training should also include extensive backing and other hard maneuvers. I feel it was evident that on my husband's first solo trip that he had an accident that his training was not sufficient.

My husband likes driving and will continue to drive.

I am glad that you are driving and doing well. That gives up hope that the future will not be so bleak!

Thank you for the prayers!

I think it is a good idea for you to start a new thread. I will finish up my husband's saga on this one and let yours be about new things at May. Also Overtheroad has a very nice web site and is doing a journal on it and pictures. I hope others check out his web-site.

Take Care,

Today the accident and the police report came in the mail from the first accident. And the report for the second one.

The police report was really something. Completely omitted the fact that the security guard came up and helped my husband get out of the parking lot. They made it sound as if he ran after him to get the plate number.

Then the report also stated that my husband panicked after he hit the first tree and gunned the gas and it mad him sound as if he was in the parking lot like a mad man.

This was not the case. He never gunned the gas! My husband was shaking his head when he read the report! I think this officer should have been a fantasy writer instead of a police officer.

There was a citation issued at the first accident but no court date was given.
At the bottom of the citation it said it was turned over to the D.A.

We have never heard anything more from the D.A. in Oregon. So I do not think that they will prosecute my husband and that citation may not go on his record.

Both accidents said that they were not DOT reportable. So that is also a very good thing.

He will speak again to the guy for the dedicated route on Monday and let him know this.

It was great having him home this weekend. Today we celebrated my sons 15th birthday. My son has his two Friends spending the night. We live in the forest and set up a treasure hunt for the boys with clues then my husband and step-dad ambush them. This year they nailed them with silly string. We did not do water because it got colder earlier in the week.
My husband really enjoyed this and would have missed this a great deal if he was still with May Trucking. So even a sad ending to my husbands job still has brought some joy.

I only hope by the end of this next week he has something definite lined up for work! Hopefully something that we will see him at least a bit more than every 5-7 weeks.

Glad to hear your Grandfather is doing well. Thank you for your kind thoughts.

That would be a bummer to get your solo papers and your last chance papers at the same time.

We will be in touch with the board. My husband is not quiting driving yet as long as there is a company that will give him another chance. The director at the school said he would still be able to work. More important he said I have gorgeous eyes!!! He said it in a nice way in front of my husband! But it was a nice compliment. Sometimes husbands forget to pay their wives compliments after a while.

I will start another thread when he gets to the new company!

Two preventable accidents in a very short time.... and during a probationary period... It will be really tough to get another OTR job anytime soon. Should look at other options.

I do not know if you have been reading this thread or not. I would rather believe the director of the school who has twenty years experience of truck driving and has been a director of the school for more than ten years now.

One lead will be followed up on Monday for a dedicated team run. Out 4 days home 3 for $700.00 a week. My husband spoke to him on Friday and sent details about his accidents. He was told that he believed he could get him approved through the safety department.

He will also call Systems on Monday. I was told allot of it depends what shows on your DAC record whether or not he will be hire-able there.

He will stay in trucking. And we will not look at other options. And we will report just how soon his next TRUCKING job will begin on this thread!

No need to get upset!!! Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Maybe the truck driving school director is looking to re- enroll you husband for some re- fresher training??? Most truck driving schools are not very ethical. BTW ... In my five years in trucking... one year as a company driver and four as a O/O , I have never had a PREVENTABLE accident.

After I already stated that he has a lead for a new job you state that he should look for something else. And the lead came from the director of the driving school!!!!! No they are not interested in enrolling him in a refresher course.

Glad you have not ever had a preventable. How long did you train when you just got out of school? How good was your trainer? I would be surprised if you give your trainer any credit if he was excellent.

You appear to be a little better than the rest of us  or so you think!

That is a typical attitude these with drivers these days. Not willing to take responsibility for their actions. Always pointing the finger at everyone but themselves. It is always the companies, the security gaurd, DOT, shipper, receiver, traffic, the truck stop or the weathers fault.
