if the pick-up tube falls off, the engine quits..... that's why it was sitting on the side of the road

It sounds like a vent problem. I had the same thing happen on my Peterbilt. The shop replaced the vent that screws into the tank and the problem was solved.

Umm...yea. Sorta figured that one out myself. No fuel, no work.

sorry, i must have mis-read ; i thought you might have been suggesting that 'maybe the pickup tube fell off', because that would shut the engine down, which his particular engine is NOT doing

If there is a problem with the pickup tube it could only be drawing fuel at the top half of the tank. Air leak, rust, etc.....Easy to take out and inspect. I always eliminate the easy (stupid) things first. Then work on the harder stuff next.

i crawled under the truck on my last trip to Maryland and didn't see an obstruction in the actual vent tube. but like a previous poster said its make the metal "L" connector on the tank which connects to the vent tube. i will have the shop pull the fairing (fiberglass covering the fuel tank) and get a better look at it

if you're suggesting that the tube might be cracked 1/2 way down, that would be incorrect as well.... if that were the case; when the fuel level reaches that cracked portion, it will suck air and shut him down

remove both fuel return lines and place each in its own 5 gal pail. start and run the engine and watch the level in the pails ; do they fill up evenly? or, is one slower then the other?

if they fill evenly, the problem is likely tank venting

if one fills slower than the other, re-install the return lines, and then remove the suction lines and place them in the pails that you just filled (make the levels even before you start the engine)

start the engine, if one side empties slower, then that pick-up tube is blocked/restricted (not cracked or broken). try blowing air through it in the wrong direction to clear it

that is a great idea, but i don't they will do this. They are big on the quick, cheap fixes. The said they fixed it (cross my fingers) but that will be my next method
