Default Mack CH612 9 Speed Eaton No Tag.

It's time to replace that Eaton 9 speed in my single axle dump. I crawled under to read the tag but it's gone. The rivets are there but the tag rusted right off.
There are lots of used trannies in the 9 speed Eaton flavour but I need a bolt in.
The truck is one of those Atkinson converted tractors. It looked like a Coca Kola truck to me.
It has an E-7 300 with a 12k front and 23k rear. It's a small truck.
Is there a rule of thumb for me to use when looking at trannies to swap in?
I don't put more then 10 ton in this truck and I run maybe 1000 mi a year with it.
I really need one more season out of it and then I can find a nice tandem. If this truck was worth anything, I'd drop an 8LL in it but I can't see it in this old dumper.

Thanks again, in advance, guys.

Ted

The 1994 CH613 that I used to have had a RTX14609B in it.

Very common transmission, you shouldn't have any trouble finding one.

If I had to guess....which I do....Id say that's the tranny I have.
Thanks Kranky.

Are there any other trannies that are common, that will swap in? In case I trip over one somewhere?
There's a fresh RTF8709B close to me for cheap.

A RTF8709B would not have a high enough torque capacity to handle that engine, only 800 ft. lbs. vs the 1400 ft lbs of the RTX14609B

The RTF8709B also would have the forward mounted shift tower which would not align with the opening in your cab floor, and it's a direct in high gear transmission as opposed to the .73 overdrive of the RTX14609B, therefore running in 8th gear with the RTF8709 would be similar to running in 7th with the RTX14609B, you'd lose a lot of top end road speed.

I'm not having any luck finding a 9 speed. Whered' they all go?
I can get a 7LL or 8LL for the same price.
An E7 engine with a Roadranger trans has a Mack to Eaton adapter kit right?
Does that mean that I can use that bell housing on any RT tranny?
What about a Mack tranny? The 6 speed is OK for a dump truck right?

A 14708LL would be the best choice of the transmissions mentioned.

I had a CL 713 with a E7 350 and a 14708LL.

The Eaton Fuller has to have the special bellhousing with the Mack mount setup for your application, the housing from your 9 speed should fit the 14708LL.

Why is that anyway?
I thought the bell housings were SAE.

They are.

The difference is that Cat, Cummins, Detroit etc have the mounts on the engine flywheel housing, so no mounts are needed on the transmission, whereas Mack has the mounts on the transmission bellhousing.

You could hang a Eaton Fuller trans with the regular bellhousing on the back of a Mack engine, but there would be no way to mount it to the frame of the truck!

Thanks Kranky.
Food for thought.
