Default Multiple issues with '05 379 Long Nose

I just got into my '05 Pete, and will try and give you as much information as I can.

First off, it just had it's B-Service approximately 2000 Miles ago (when I got the truck). It has a new fuel filter which is not showing signs of being clogged, it also has 2 new air filters which is showing a maximum of 2 Inches H2O.

Engine: Cummins ISX rated at 475 Horse
Exhaust Brake: "C" Brake
Transmission: Eaton Fuller 13 Speed

Here are the issues that I am having.

I was told that there is possibly some blue smoke coming from my stacks, however it was not consistently happening.

On a side note, the truck was struggling going up White Bird (US 97) and when I was on a 6% grade, I was averaging 22-25, and when it went to 7% grade, I was averaging 19-22. Fan was on, Heat was on, A/C was turned off.

    Stats:

If anyone has ideas, I'd appreciate it.

we have 3 05 petes with 475 cats and 10 speeds. all 3 have been trouble. water pumps. turbos, alignment issues, and so forth, maybe it was just a bad year, all the other ones we have, both older and newer have been normal. I can tell you that on all pete's, when the cruise is turned on (whether or not it is set) the exhaust brake will not come on until you hit the brake pedal. Pete thought that was better idea.

Well, that seems kinda silly to not have the exhaust brake come on when you have the cruise on. If that is the case then I guess it's really not a problem at all. Still gonna have it checked out though. Thanks

Might be a connection that is loose.

That is a computer set up issue. I believe they can set it so it works with the cruise as well.

*Regardless of weight or if I am loaded for that matter, speed falls off very rapidly and either have to down-shift at the shallower base of a hill. (I know that I can expect deceleration, but not as fast as this is losing speed).
Cummins produce more torque when running at higher RPM's. My 565 cummins is the same way. I always drop a gear before a big hill, and then I don't have the issue as much. Try getting your RPM's above 1500 before the hill, and see if it helps.

*When the R's get down to around 1000-1200 it is making the equivalent to a "coughing" noise and have to down shift.
*When I am idling, it is idling really rough around 500 R's
Have the EGR checked. Cummins was having a problem with them around that time.

Your oil temp seems high. It should be running around 200 at the most.

In regards to the hills, it does not matter. I can take a small hill and it is losing speed as if it was taking a large hill. I can understand some loss in speed, but when it drops off really fast I would be inclined to think there is a problem. Even if I drop it a gear before the hill it loses the speed just as fast as if I left it in the same gear!

I have a 01 w900 W/ C15 and my oil temp seems to stay below my water temp a bit, 175 degree or so.

My Jake also won't work with the cruise on.

I'm not sure what the oil pressure should be at on a Cummins ?

I have twin air filters also and the filter gauge on the dash hardly moves,,, 2lbs with my foot in it.

Your idle seems low, the Cat idles around 625 rpm.

It is, I just wanted input from others who might have some ideas so I know if I am going in the right direction when it goes to Cummins tomorrow.

It may say 475 on the engine tag but the company might have that thing turned way down. One truck I drove the engine brake came on with the cruise but not till I was 5 mph over the set point on my cruise. So if I had it set on 65 she'd roll until 70 and then the engine brake would come on. Is yours not coming on no matter how fast over your cruise set point your going ?

I have a Cat so this info could be wrong for you but you should be able to get them to reset your cruise to a "hard "setting that means the cruise will give the engine more fuel when your speed drops. This will hurt your mileage a bit but so does downshifting for all the hills. You can also get the cruise parameters closed up tighter so the cruise will come on sooner to keep your speed up. Mine is at 3mph insted of 5mph from your chosen speed. Lastly they should be able to make your jake work on cruise too.
