Questions About OW Spread Axle & Dump Valves
Hello-
Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question. I work for a company that owns 2 spread axle trailers (mobile stages). We are looking into installing a dump valve on both to make placing the trailer in tight spots easier as well as save the tires. The one trailer is over weight, at 41280 between the 2 axles, the other trailer is at 38620 between the axles. Does anyone here have experience using a dump valve on a trailer that was overweight? The valve would only be used in circumstances that require the trailer to be moved into a tight placement. What brought this discussion on was us having to place both 53' trailers in front of City Hall in Boston this past summer for a music festival. Thanks.

You are only allowed 40,000 on a 10' spread. Some states may look the other way as long as your gross is under 80,000. You can also permit for the extra weight. Using a dump valve could save wear on your tires. I have used a dump valve on axles that were maxed out on the weight and had no problem with them. You would not want to pull the trailer with the dump valve open since it could damage your axle.
