Default VNT Valve Calibration

(edit to correct name, its' a VNT valve not a VAT valve. I misunderstood him, [I'm in Miami])

Took the truck in to the mechanic due to truck hesitating. I thought it might be an injector going bad but he said the VNT valve needed to be calibrated.

I have no idea what that means, and the truck just started hesitated again but all of a sudden since he calibrated that thing my fuel mileage has jumped up. I have always got about 6.3 mpg but since the day he did that it is up to 7.3 mpg.

Is this somehow a coincidence? I am just now buying another truck and am wondering if I should get the same thing done (or checked out) for the new truck. It only cost me $175

Anyone know about this VNT valve and if it has anything to do with fuel mileage?

Thank you.

Only thing I can think of is the VGT valve on the turbo. It will increase power, response, and fuel mileage when properly calibrated
